Black-Tie Dress Code for Women: The Vogue Guide | Vogue
February 5, 2025 - For anyone who wants to go the suiting route, the brief is pretty simple (and literal): you’re to wear a black bow tie with your dinner jacket. Because it’s a step down in fanciness from white tie, the black-tie dress code leaves more room for interpretation when it comes to garments beyond the suit.

What to Wear to a Black-Tie Wedding as a Guest
March 20, 2015 - A floor-length black gown is an elegant, classy choice that is perfectly appropriate for this dress code. Jewel tones are also excellent options (especially for fall fêtes), and pastel hues are lovely for summer weddings. Lastly, when styling your black-tie wedding guest look, opt for sleek heels, gorgeous jewelry, and an elegant clutch, so the overall ensemble remains formal; and you can never go wrong with diamonds or pearls, especially if you're wearing a more muted dress.

r/mensfashion on Reddit: Black Tie Attire
May 2, 2023 -
Im going to a wedding next month in Central Washington. Temperatures are often 90’s plus. It’s an outdoor wedding, in the afternoon. They’ve asked for black tie attire but after talking with the family, I’m not convinced they know what black tie means. (Maybe I don’t).
My impression is it means black tuxedo and black tie for men. It’s my family and I know no one will be getting tuxedos just to attend the wedding.
My question is this, how serious do I need to take the attire request? Do I show up in a tux? Or a black (too damn hot) suit?
Or would I be ok wearing a tan wool/linen suit with a silk shirt, and loafers?

Black tie means tux! However, it doesn’t always have to be black. For an outdoor wedding in eastern wa I would go with a white/off white linen tuxedo 2 piece.

That doesn’t adhere to “black tie” as a dress code, but nor does it sound like they know what they are talking about. If you think that that fits with what everyone else will be wearing, despite how it’s described, I’d send a picture of it to someone from the family and ask if that is what they mean.

A Guide To Black-Tie Dress Code For Women | John Lewis & Partners
If the event is in the height of summer, the hemline rules can be lifted a little; have fun (and keep your cool) with a suitably chic minidress. If there’s a strong likelihood you’ll be standing around outside, sleeves are a good option. And, if you’re attending a festive party, you’ve got the perfect excuse to wear sequins. Your jacket will be the first thing anyone sees when you arrive at your black-tie event, yet it’s likely to be the last thing you think about when planning your outfit.
