I spent a week in SUN in 2020. I was suicidal, manic, unmedicated, not in therapy, and undiagnosed with everything I currently am working on. Honestly, it was a pretty decent experience. it’s the only time I’ve been hospitalized so I don’t have much to base my time there on, but it really helped me. I was on one-to-one for the first three days, and started attending the groups on the third day. I didn’t interact much until another day or two later, when the meds they were giving me finally started to work (please, interact with the groups. nobody is judgmental and it does actually help more than you’d expect). I was diagnosed with my current diagnoses, which in itself meant a lot as I was able to finally compartmentalize some of what I was dealing with. I met some really nice people, staff and patients included. the short break from day-to-day helped a lot, to really give me a chance to focus on my mental well-being. However. I also witnessed a patient try to kill himself. one of the staff had introduced us, because they’d gotten to know me and knew I was pretty friendly and got along well with a lot of people. so we’d talked and shared some of our trials and tribulations. it was really traumatizing to see, but in the aftermath the staff was understanding and immediately worked to help those of us who’d witnessed it. and most importantly, he was okay! my experience was good for the most part.
