Supermicro BIOS update - is clearing CMOS necessary?
Supermicro clearly know that people are willing to pay for a special licence to update motherboard BIOS (in this case A1SRM-2558F) via IPMI. But they insist that one must clear the CMOS after the update and before setting BIOS defaults. I have rarely bothered to do this with other mb BIOS... More on truenas.com

March 30, 2024 -

Hey guys,

i have this supermicro AS -E301-9D-8CN4, always work really well no issue last 1.5 years but the other day, i reboot it and never cameback...

I look at the manual "how to reset the cmos" thinking it will help but either im not doing propely or it does nothing... https://www.supermicro.com/en/Aplus/system/Embedded/AS-E301-9D-8CN4.cfm

from the manual:

CMOS Clear

JBT1†is†used†to†clear†CMOS¨†which†will†also†clear†any†passwordsƆInstead†of†pins¨†this†jumper

consists of contact pads to prevent accidentally clearing the contents of CMOS.

To Clear CMOS

  1. First power down the system and unplug the power cord(s).

  2. Remove the cover of the chassis to access the motherboard.

  3. Remove the onboard battery from the motherboard.

  4. Short†the†CMOS†pads†with†a†metal†object†such†as†a†small†screwdriver†for†at†least†four

seconds.

5. Remove the screwdriver (or shorting device).

6. Replace the cover, reconnect the power cord(s) and power on the system.

All good except #4, i use a screwdriver and to "short" it but not 100% it did anything

this is where i put the screw driver for 10 seconds (after removing the battery and disconnecting the power source)

When i start the system... the light are green and fan starts... i can connect to the IPMI web console but, no "interface", the vga or the html5 console have no signal...

no signal from IPMI

If i go to the IPMI POST Snooping options, it give me the code b5 if i leave 1 stick of ram and 10 if i remove everything ( i also remove any card expension (network), ram, nvme and ssd) - i have difficulty to find any info re this BIOS and those code...

b5 or 10 when nothing is connected

I also notice that the hardware info is wrong... like it hasnt refreshed, at the moment only 1 stick of ram is connected but "it sees" 4 sticks, like when the system was fully operational...

wrong hardware display, only DIMMA1 is populated at the moment...

I also noticed that the usb keyboard doesnt work... (usually i will notice it light up rgb when server start or after a few seconds...)

So what now? any suggestion on the next steps? is the board now faulty?

thanks!
