As I understand it, one problem with a grinder is that it lacks the inspection step. It can remove high points, but it can't tell you if there are any low points remaining. Do we have optical sensors that are precise enough to measure flatness to that level of accuracy and yet durable enough to survive a shop environment? A surface grinding wheel will breakdown from both leading edges as you make cuts. Depending on the wheel and material you may need to re-dress sooner or later. Too soft of a wheel and it’ll break down too fast. Too hard of a wheel and it’ll load up and not remove material as efficiently and eventually burn the material. Finding the perfect wheel is one that last without overly loading up but also one that doesn’t breakdown too quickly. You can also mitigate how much a wheel breaks down or loads up by how you dress the wheel. Run the diamond across fast for a open dress ( more ragged ) or slow for a closed dress ( smoother ).
