April 29, 2024 - The down feed needs to be in small increments, but a screw and wheel is fine, provided the mechanism is loaded in one direction. On a surface grinder the weight of the head and spindle will be sufficient. On my cylindrical grinder the infeed fine pitch screw has large weight on the end to ensure the mechanism is loaded in one direction.

May 14, 2006 - How many other people have built their own grinders and want to share their experience ? ... Ummmm....surface grinders are practically given away these days. How could you afford the raw materials and basic parts (in comparison) to build one? Heck, assuming you want a magnetic chuck to go with it, there have been many recent surface grinders sold with chuck, where the total package brought less than the chuck would cost.

March 13, 2015 - To use his new Surface Grinder, [Daniel] creates a CNC g-code file to move his work piece back and forth underneath the grinding wheel. Being able to control the depth of cut and feed rates with his CNC machine removes human error from the grinding process and leaves a consistent finish on the part.

April 12, 2020 - A week ago I decided I needed something to get a flat uniform finish on some steel parts. Something like a surface grinder. Everything is closed during the lockdown so I was stuck with what I had on hand. After three revisions this is what I ended up with: I think the design is pretty self...

Built the House Made over the holidays. Really happy with it. But there was no way I would have gotten away with spending another 1k+ on an attachment.
So I came up with the idea to try it myself. All parts procured on Amazon for around $200.
Let me know if you have tried this as well and if you think I missed anything. All I have left to do is mount the digital gage.
Happy grinding folks!

Parts list for everyone asking. There are several options for each item, some cheaper, some way more expensive. I chose based on reviews and specific intended use. If I had to do it again I would go with a 50mm linear stage instead of the 100mm. It’s added weight and bulk. I’m never going to use it one something requiring that space. Second thing to consider is going with a more solid set of bearings on the double axis roller. Or mount both bearings to the stage. I’m noticing a little side to side movement with in use. Not much, but if .001 matters it could be an issue. Clamp set: $18 https://a.co/d/cPLBBPw Double axis roller: $79 https://a.co/d/bL6SjiB 3x3x1/4 aluminum angle: $20 https://a.co/d/9ixWqDk 100mm linear stage table: $115 https://a.co/d/a6XIg6c Digital dial indicator: $40 https://a.co/d/2NnGCb5 150lb switchable magnets 2 pac: $102 https://a.co/d/1HMRlDX

Homemade surface grinder? - The Home Machinist!
Wow, there is a lot of old surface grinders around dirt cheap, it seems that it would be easier and better to fix up an existing grinder than build one. Those little KO Lee tool and cutter grinders will work ok as a surface grinder on small parts, those can be picked up for a couple hundred dollars.

May 14, 2011 - What I was thinking is to possibly pick up a used cross slide table and magnetic chuck, I have seen both for sale for a reasonable price, and setting it up so I can use the 8" contact wheel on my belt grinder. I know it wouldn't be as precise as an actual surface grinder, but it would be better than how I clean up the surface of my steel now.

December 16, 2024 - I have some 22-23" OAL 1/16" thick blades I want to be able to heat treat, and then surface grind to remove scale/warpage, so I decided to do a 24" long chuck even though most of my blades are in the 7-9" length. Figured I would do it once! With the 3 150 Magswitches engaged, when I grind in the direction of the belt, it pushes the chuck itself in the direction of the belt.

November 16, 2020 - I know the purists here will cringe but on occasion I've used a cup wheel on a drill press as a crude surface grinder. Nowhere near as precise or as nice a finish as a real surface grinder but it WILL reduce the thickness of too hard to machine parts and lapping with fine paper on a flat surface improves the finish.

DIY Rigid Surface Grinder - Has anyone built one?
All you would need to add would be some air thrust bearings. Seems to me that the way column would be harder to design for the spindle axis than would be spindle. If the spindle was a dual wall steel with EG inside it could have high internal dampening which would be ideal in a surface grinder.
