I couldn't get into all the surfaces with the grinder so milled some of them. The vice is of course a noodle and it seems it flexed the way I needed to clamp it for milling one surface. It was just a quick job for the heck, so I will go back and touch up a few surfaces when I get a chance.

September 10, 2006 - If you are going to machine ceramics, glass, quartz, stone, QZ, anything with diamond tooling, the surface grinder is pretty much a necessity. (Just makes things easier) Having used several different machines, I found the Chevalier(sp?) to be the most ergonomic of the manual machines. Machine life is short when machining ceramics @ commercial volumes. They're nearly considered a consumable in that business. Really came to appreciate the automatics after using manuals for tedious stuff. Miss having a sg here at my current job.

July 29, 2013 - If you needed .100 removed and then a + /- .001 or .0005 size with a grind surface finish the one set up on the grinder would be much faster than two set-ups with grinder and mill. The wheel is much stronger with work forces to the OD. For the heaviest cuts the down feed is best done only on the left side to go to the wheel rotation and avoid climb grinding or smacking the work to pull it under. I don’t recommend doing this all the time but in some cases one can cut job time in half with this kind of grinding.

For jobs like chuck backing plates where the thread has to be accurately cut, having threading toolbits is a major part of the job.
