Formulating the Support Vector Machine Optimization Problem || Math ∩ Programming
June 5, 2017 - The first is the true distance from that point to the candidate hyperplane; the second is the inner product with $ w$. The two blue dashed lines are the solutions to $ \langle x, w \rangle = \pm 1$. To solve the SVM by hand, you have to ensure the second number is at least 1 for all green points, at most -1 for all red points, and then you have to make $ w$ as short as possible. As we’ve discussed, shrinking $ w$ moves the blue lines farther away from the separator, but in order to satisfy the constraints the blue lines can’t go further than any training point. Indeed, the optimum will have those blue lines touching a training point on each side.

April 21, 2025 - By this I wanted to show you that the parallel lines depend on (w,b) of our hyperplane, if we multiply the equation of hyperplane with a factor greater than 1 then the parallel lines will shrink and if we multiply with a factor less than 1, they expand. We can now say that these lines will move as we do changes in (w,b) and this is how this gets optimized. But what is the optimization function? Let’s calculate it. We know that the aim of SVM is to maximize this margin that means distance (d).

June 15, 2024 - Solving this optimization problem yields the weight vector and bias term that define the optimal hyperplane. The support vectors, which are the data points closest to the hyperplane, determine the margin. In practice, SVMs are implemented using optimization libraries that efficiently solve the dual formulation.

March 24, 2021 - Also, note that THIS is what we are going to want to code up to do SVM from scratch. Let's see how this looks. First, let's generate some data. Note that we change the default (0,1) labels to (-1,1). This is required because we want our hyperplane equation to be equal to 0 and the margins to be equal to -1,1 respectively. from sklearn.datasets import make_blobs from scipy import optimize import numpy as np def gen_data(n_samples): X, t = make_blobs(n_samples=n_samples, centers=2, cluster_std=2.0) minmax = MinMaxScaler() X = minmax.fit_transform(X) for i in range(len(t)): if t[i] == 0: t[i] = -1 return X,t

May 7, 2018 - SVM works by finding the optimal hyperplane which could best separate the data. The question then comes up as how do we choose the optimal hyperplane and how do we compare the hyperplanes. Let’s first consider the equation of the hyperplane \(w\cdot x + b=0\).

Each element gi,j is equal to the inner product of the predictors as transformed by φ. However, we do not need to know φ, because we can use the kernel function to generate Gram matrix directly. Using this method, nonlinear SVM finds the optimal function f(x) in the transformed predictor space.

April 18, 2019 - SVM maximizes the geometric margin (as already defined, and shown below in figure 2) by learning a suitable decision boundary/decision surface/separating hyperplane. Fig. 2. A is ith training example, AB is the geometric margin of hyperplane w.r.t. A · The way I have derived the optimization objective starts with using the concepts of functional and geometric margin; and after establishing that the two interpretations of SVM coexist with each other, the final optimization objective is derived.
