I wanted to determine whether it was better to stay on Magenta Max and buy the phone outright through Apple or move to Go5G Plus to get the better trade values so I did some basic calculations.

Currently, we pay $112/mo for two lines on Magenta Max with an Insider discount. Both phones are paid off, so this is only the cost of the plan. Only one person needs a new phone, so let's assume we are talking about only a single line here. Assuming we move to Go5G Plus, that will cost an extra $10 per month, or $240 over the period of 24 months. With an iPhone 13 trade-in, an iPhone 16 Pro 256GB will cost $11.50-$12 per month. But there's also a $35 connection fee and sales tax.

TOTAL FOR T-MOBILE OPTION: $645 over the period of two years (24mo). This includes tax, connection fee, monthly phone payment, and the increased cost of moving to Go5G Plus.

If you trade through the Apple Store, they give $250 for an iPhone 13. The total cost with tax for the 16 Pro is $1191.

TOTAL FOR APPLE STORE TRADE OPTION: $941. Just the cost of the new phone, tax, minus the trade value.

So as you can see, it saves you about $300 by going through T-Mobile, but let's say you keep the iPhone 16 Pro a 3rd year, then you save only about $200. Now what if you buy the iPhone directly from Apple and rather than doing the trade, you sell it on Facebook or Swappa? I see the iPhone 13 listed for about $350 on Swappa.

You’re missing the insider discount on the $10 increase, so you’re probably closer to $600 by upgrading plans. You’re also assuming that nowhere in the next 2-3 years will you upgrade the other line.

With insider code each line costs $4 more per month moving from Magenta Max to Go5G+. So with two lines and in two years (EIP period), you'll be looking at a total increase of $192. Even if you just upgrade one device, you'll come out better. But you can even do better than that. Buy two iPhone 12 and do the upgrading with Apple on your new plan. Then sell one of the new 16's (but be sure you do not leave T-Mobile without pay off the balance so that the buyer won't get screwed up). Given the direction T-Mobile is heading, all Go5G plans will likely be downgraded next year.

So I work for T-Mobile customer care and can promise you the promo is real and you do not have to make any account changes like a rate plan change nor add a line. Now every account is not eligible for it though. You’d have to call in and they can see if you have the targeted promotion, also to say this promotion is only available through customer care, I’ve attempted to send some customers to the stores, followed up with them, and store claims they don’t see the promotion. I’ve had luck with experience stores being able to get a customer the promotion if they are a targeted customer. Additionally you only pay sales tax, no activation/upgrade fee. So if you have good account finance credit, you’re only paying sales tax. This promotion is very real and has been going on a little over a month. Of course you have to turn in your device within the time frame and it not be a lost/stolen device but just about any phone you can trade in. Don’t listen to the users here claiming it moves you to another plan, cause it does not if you have this targeted promotion I can assure you 100% best bet is to call and see if you have it.

For your plan probably not. If you move to Verizon get ready to pay $10+ more than the advertised price because of the taxes and fees that aren't included like on your plan. They do three year contracts as well. Unless the Verizon plan is significantly cheaper (which I doubt) you aren't going to come out ahead over just buying a phone full price.
