It depends on where you're from. I'm from Australia and we call them both g-strings. We wear thongs on our feet here! Americans tend to call the ones with skimpier/string backs g-strings and the thicker, slightly more coverage version thongs. More on reddit.com

I have recently just started wearing thongs and really love them. Since I am new to this, I have been looking around at different style options and I’m curious what other people prefer and why. I started with more traditional thongs, that is, thongs that are more substantial with more fabric. But I am realizing I might want thongs that are as minimal as possible. I am curious what others prefer and why they prefer it. What benefits do you find going one way or the other? Do you do both an alternate whenever it seems right? What are the downsides one way or the other?

if you are afraid of a whale tail showing, gonwith a fuller coverage thong. if a little bit shows, it will look like regular underwear. if a G-string shows, its going to be obvious what it is.

Thongs at least I kind of get, but srsly what is the point of g strings? Does anybody actually wear them? It just feels a little ridiculous to me to wear underwear that is literally flossing your butt like that.

I thought G-strings and thongs were the same thing just different countries? We call them G-strings in Australia anyway. Thongs are for the feet! Anyway, post weight loss my butt is shaped in a way that I cannot wear any other type of underwear without my butt eating it, resulting in me waddling around with a buttcrack full of fabric all day. Yes I work out, I work out heaps and lift heavy. It's just how my butt is. I've tried every shape and brand I could find. I've read every review of the "comfiest undies ever - guaranteed not to ride up". Yes even trunk style don't work with my shape. It became a running joke in my friend group. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to ditch my undies in the bathroom on a night out. I have probably spent more on underwear in the last 10 years than I have spent on my mortgage. It sounds dramatic but it's really impacted my mental health, I felt like a freak. Eventually I had to give up and admit I can only comfortably wear G-strings. So there are some of us out there.
