I'm trying to compare licensing costs for a small team to use either Power BI or Tableau, but recently, it seems that the pricing structures have become fairly convoluted. Would anyone be able to sanity check my numbers?
Team of 5 people - one developer who'd directly build reports, four who'd be viewing the reports:
PBI:
Requires Power BI Pro - we already use Office 365
- 5 Power BI Pro licenses @ $9.99 per user per month = $600/yr
Tableau:
1 Tableau Creator license - $70/mnth
4 Tableau Viewer licenses - $15/mnth
Total/yr = $1560/yr

Tableau viewer requires minimum of a 100 so you'd be looking at Explorer licenses at $35/mo each.

I dunno about the Tableau cost but the PowerBI Pro license is $9.99 a month. Not sure if you are a MS partner, bit if so, you might be entitled to some free licenses. Additionally, there are some restrictions depending on how you connect your data to your data source which should be looked at. Look at the implications of Import vs Direct query connection methods. Not sure what the difference is with Tableau. But with Import, your dataset cannot be more than 1GB but with Direct Query you don't have that but you are however limited by the number of features you can use. Not sure what the comparison is with Tableau but something that should be looked at. There is also PowerBI Reporting server that uses a different license. I think choosing a tool based on cost instead of needs is a bit shortsighted.
