Hi everyone!

Hope that someone can help me with this.

I noticed this morning that when I use the Preview mode in GTM, the Tag Assistant windows says "Could not connect to Tag Assistant" :

The issue is not specific to that particular account, but all GTM accounts seems to be touched. I confirm that the GTM tag is properly installed on those websites. The preview mode have been working for years on those websites without any issue.

An error like this often occurs when you have a third party embedded object (like a cross domain chat widget or cross domain web form) on your site.

Had the same problem a few months back. Turning off my adblocker extensions did the trick. Hope you figure it out!

I had the same problem. Opening GTM in incognito and then running the preview mode fixed it for me. I'm guessing its one of my extensions.

August 15, 2023 - Having 'Shields Up' on a website (which is the default) will absolutely prevent Tag Assistant from connecting. Incidentally having Shields Up will also block any other Google endpoints, including Google Ads, Google Analytics and Optimize.

Hello all,

I am running into an issue after the new update. For a couple of my sites, I get this error message:

"Could not connect to (REDACTED).net.

Tag Assistant could not connect to a tag on
REDACTED.net

A timeout occurred while attempting to connect.
Check that the page is tagged correctly and no errors have occurred."

Any idea why I may be running into this issue? It was working fine on Thursday. I am using Wix currently for my websites if that may help at all. A sidenote is that I am not getting any history changes like I was on Thursday so I don't know if more changed after the update. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem, it was so simple before. As usual, Google didn't test it properly or ask for any user feedback.

Had the same problem. Then I removed the "Avira Save Shopping" Plugin from chromebrowser and everything worked fine.

Has anyone had difficulty with losing connection with tag assistant using Chrome? It's happened to me for as long as I can remember, where I get a few minutes or seconds of having the page connected and then it just randomly disconnects. I've tried disabling all extensions, etc. to no avail.

Disabling the Tag Assistant extension does help, but then it makes it utterly unusable with a new window created, no way to change the URL, etc. So I have go to back to using the Tag Assistant and live with it dropping the connection persistently.

I could use Safari, but that's a pain too.

Any ideas what might be going on?

It has always done this. It seems much more stable if you keep tag assistant and your webpage on different tabs in the same browser. It still drops but does appear to be better.

I don't use analytics very often but I've been trying to figure something out and I wanted to make sure everything was working properly but when I check in with Tag Assistant it connects to the site but says there are 0 tags found. I've confirmed that the snippets are installed properly on the site and in Tag Manager the Tag Coverage says the pages are tagged. How do I get the Tag Assistant to recognize the tags?

Make sure Google Tag (used to be the Configuration Tag) is properly configured in Tag Manager with Measurement ID, Trigger and so on. Make sure Tag Manager has been published. Use the preview mode from Tag Manager (which basically runs tag assistant) and see what you see.
