3 days ago - The name also appears in the Book of Sui (636) and other early works, but scholars cannot agree on whether these references are to the Ryukyus, Taiwan or even Luzon. The name Formosa (福爾摩沙) dates from 1542, when Portuguese sailors noted it on their maps as Ilha Formosa (Portuguese for "beautiful island"). The name Formosa eventually "replaced all others in European literature" and remained in common use among English speakers into the 20th century. In 1603, a Chinese expedition fleet anchored at a place in Taiwan called Dayuan, a variant of "Taiwan".

r/academia on Reddit: Taiwan on maps of China - thoughts?
July 3, 2023 -
I'm reviewing a manuscript. It's on ecology in relation to China written by Chinese academics.
One of the maps shows the various regions of China, highlighted and named. Imagine it a bit like a map of US states. All adjacent countries are cropped, so it's just an outline of China.
However, the map includes Taiwan and includes it highlighted within the "South China" region.
As a reviewer, what are your thoughts on this? Evidently it feels more the job of an editor, not reviewer. But would your personal stance come into it at all, would you review the manuscript? My heads is an ethical rollercoaster right now figuring out if I should have a stance in this context and, if so, what.

just FYI, it doesn't matter what your stance or the editor stance is on the matter, the authors have no choice but to include the Taiwan in their map of China if they are working in China even if they don't agree with it. It is the LAW in China. I bet they also include the 9-dash line encompassing all of the South China Sea as China territory as well. If they don't do so and later get found out by someone in their department or the government, their career is over. if you or the editor insist that they take out Taiwan on their map, they will just withdraw and submit to another journal. Publish a China map without Taiwan is a career suicide in China.
