You know those movies you saw as a kid that you have vague recollection of? The movies you thought you just made up in your dreams and could never remember the title? That is the story with me and 1993's We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story. Released at a time when there was a surge in dinosaur-related media like Jurassic Park, We're Back! didn't do that well at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics.
I first recall seeing the movie years ago either on VHS or Cartoon Network. I only remember stuff like the goofy dinosaurs, the two kids, and that really creepy circus. Years later, I saw the movie was streaming on Netflix and just had to rewatch it. After doing so, I can conclude that We're Back is one of the weirdest animated movie I've ever seen.
The plot involves a bunch of dinosaurs who gain intelligence by eating "Brain Grain." A special cereal made by inventor Captain Neweyes, who is voiced by journalist Walter Cronkite and he wants them to meet children or something. Then there's some conflict involving the dinosaurs being in New York City (it's always New York City) where they befriend two kids, Louie & Cecilia, and get exploited by Neweyes' evil brother Professor Screweyes, and then more hijinks ensue.
One thing to note about We're Back! is the voice talent which includes John Goodman, Charles Fleischer, Martin Short, Kenneth Mars, Julia Child, Jay Leno, Yeardley Smith, and Felicity Kendal.
There's also some standout moments like the song at the parade "Roll Back the Rock" and Professor's Screweye's death which is perhaps the most unique villain death in any movie.
Other than that, it's a pretty weird animated movie. There's a dinosaur that loves hot dogs, an alien that Neweyes hires to round up the dinos, and the kids get turned into monkeys.
So is it on par with the Disney animated movies that were being released at the time? Nope. But it does have that 90s nostalgia going for it including some really great animation. Who else remembers this movie?
I definitely remember the badguy, rendered alone, pathetic and frightened, getting fucking EATEN ALIVE BY CROWS!

This is one of my favorite movies for people to not remember so I get to say: โYou knowโฆ the one where the dinosaurs eat the cereal from aliens that makes them sentient and parade through New York City and end up part of a demented circus run by a guy who has a thing for crows.โ
Hello!
I remember this one scene from a CGI talking dinosaur kids movie from I believe early 2000s, but could be from the 1990s. The scene is where one of the dinosaurs gets injured, and another small animal applied medicine/ointment to it with a leaf. The animal had the ointment spread out on a leaf and then wrapped the leaf around the wound. Also, I think the animal that applied the medicine was either a monkey or a lemur. I specifically remember the animals being able to talk too.
Parts that are a little more blurry in my memory of the scene: The ointment/medicine was a yellowish-gold color, I think the monkey/lemur animal told the dinosaur to stop being a baby or something along those lines, and I think they were in a jungle type environment.
I know this is almost nothing to go off of, but this one scene has been DRIVING ME CRAZY.
The closest idea of the movie is Disney's Dinosaur (2000), but it doesn't have the leaf with the ointment on it specifically.
Not CGI or Dino, but I used to watch the Tarzan and Jane show on Disney channel as a kid, and this sounds a lot like a Terk and Tantor interaction.
I remember a movie I liked when I was younger that I can't find anywhere.
It could be german movie, but this is not safe. It is a kid's movie and it's not a hollywood movie with a big budget. Maybe a northern european movie. And it is probably from late 80s or 90s.
In the movie, there is a boy who lives in a house near the sea. I remember a scene in which the beach is shown and something is drawn on the sand with rocks.
The boy has a fabric dinosaur who is alive. I can't remember if it was alive from the beginning or if it started speaking in the movie. It is a Tyrannosaurus Rex. In my memory, he looked kinda similar to Barney, but the size of an actual fabric dinosaur, like 30-40 cm.
In one scene, the boy and his dinosaur are on the attic. They play hide and seek up there and the dinosaur scares the boy.
In another scene in the film, the boy is on is on his way to school (or on his way home from school) and has the Rex with him. The Rex doesn't speak when other people are around. The boy gets bullied by some of his classmates for having the plush toy with him. The other boy pulls on the leg of the dinosaur and a crack opens up on the dinosaurs arm or leg, leaving him hurt. It gets fixed later.
If I remember correctly, the boys parents were separated and this was part of the story, this could be wrong though.
I love the film, it truly is a masterpiece and hard to believe it'll be 21 years old soon. If a two hour film was about to be released into theaters about Dinosaurs with no dialogue in hyper realistic cgi and landscapes I'd be there in a second. Aronofsky had a film intro about the creation of life and showed a dinosaur realizing its power while drowning another dinosaur and then letting it live. I thought that scene was mesmerizing and seeing more of something like that would be breath taking. Taking away dialogue and focusing more on facial reactions and emotions through expression of the body are things I've always enjoyed watching.
