The Best Ornamental Grasses for the Garden - Fine Gardening
August 30, 2023 - With a name that gives a nod to its native-prairie origins, ‘Indian Warrior’ big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii ‘Indian Warrior’) embodies the best of big bluestem grasses. It is in fine form from spring to fall, with sturdy stems pointing skyward at all times. Big bluestems can top out at 8 feet tall, but ‘Indian Warrior’, at 5 to 6 feet tall, is compact by comparison.

Moving into a new home, what are these tall grass-like plants and do we need to trim them prior to winter?
You are probably best off wearing gloves when you cut them because they have some serrations down the side of each of the leaves, which can cut your fingers and hands. In the UK, back in the 70s and 80s, people planted these out in their front garden if they were into swinging :O More on reddit.com

Has anyone had success with planting ornamental grasses as a hedge row? Trying to decide which variety will work best. I need 4’tall at least, and will need them to be trimmable.
The first are Feather Reed Grass 'Karl Foerster. And they do exactly what the picture shows in full sun. They stay neat and can be easily trimmed over winter. More on reddit.com

OP, there are a few suggestions about Miscanthus in the thread, but please be aware that it is an aggressive species considered invasive in Ontario . It easily escapes captivity and wrecks habitat for other species. Phragmites ("Pampas grass") is another devastating ornamental grass that invades wetlands. Ontario Invasive Plant's "Grow me Instead" guide is a really excellent resource for finding native/non-invasive plants of all varieties/shapes/growth habits for your garden! Edit: if the above link for the GMI guide doesn't work, try this one and just click the guide to download. More on reddit.com

February 1, 2023 - I use larger ornamental grasses typically as a backdrop for medium to tall perennial wildflowers or as a screen to hide something like a gas meter or transformer. These taller varieties billow out to create volume as they grow to fill in spaces. They also can be used to punctuate the design as focal points.

While they may go dormant or change color in the winter, the dried seed heads and foliage can provide structure and interest in the garden during the colder months. Erosion Control: The extensive root systems of many ornamental grasses help stabilize soil, making them effective for erosion control. This can be particularly valuable in areas with sloping terrain or soil erosion issues. Privacy and Screening: Taller varieties of ornamental grasses can be used to create natural screens and borders in the garden, offering a sense of privacy.

July 13, 2021 - This ornamental grass starts by growing a lovely green foliage, but then as summer arrives, it reveals beautiful little white puffs that are hard to resist touching. They do well in containers or planted together to provide a focal point in your garden. Many people purchase these plants initially on a whim because they thought they looked cute at the nursery, but then they become a yearly staple in their garden. You can expect them to grow to about 16” tall and a foot wide.

I couldn't believe it - last time it was backbreaking. To support them, try using a plant cage, the kind you use for tomato plants.

Answer (1 of 7): I love mine too. A privacy border, and a great windbreak, that is beautiful and graceful. On windless days, many of my rural neighbors burn back the grasses. The ones out next to my drive, I will unreel the hose, and burn back in late Winter, to early March. I take hot coal a...
