Our back neighbours recently cut down a huge, gorgeous rainforest tree 😭 so they could make room for their new house and we have lost all privacy. I am wanting to try and grow something between the pool edge and the fence (don't judge, I know it needs replacing!). Can anyone suggest something tropical, tall growing that would tolerate a lot of sun in that small space or am I looking for a unicorn? We are in Sydney, Australia. TIA! 🙏

You don't have much root zone available there and I would be wary of planting anything too substantial that might impact the pool. How about some tall posts -- I'm guessing the fence is six feet standard fencing. How about posts that are 10 or 12 feet tall -- one just past each corner of the pool and one in the middle. Then attach some good quality trellising to the posts starting just below the top of the fence to the top of the posts. Then plant a bunch of vines. You would want evergreen to keep the privacy year round. Jasmine would work. You probably wouldn't want fruit because it would/could drop in the pool. If you did do fruit I would do something like passionfruit because even if they do drop in the pool they're not going to make a mess and are easily picked out. You could mix several vines depending on your preferences. I've done the same thing at my house to hide my neighbor's ugly fence. You can't get in trouble for having a too tall fence because it's not a part of the fence.

Seeking your favorite lush, tropical looking plants for the Seattle area! Preference for hardy, affordable, and fast growing.
I'm renting a property with a backyard that has great soil as it was previously a well used garden space, but has been neglected for a long time and is pretty empty and sad to look at right now. I love the look of oversized leaves, reds and yellows mixed with green, vines, and colorful flowers. So far I'm looking at elephant ears, hardy banana trees, and passionflower, and encouraging/propagating the existing spotted laurel, yucca, and bamboo.
While I know I'm limited for actual tropical plants, what are some plants that give a jungley vibe that like our climate? Bonus thanks if you have tips that have helped your tropical-esque plants thrive!

I would highly recommend selecting native plants to help support the pollinators while providing a more appealing backyard. Some Native plants that I feel have an almost tropical look would be elderberries (red or blue), pacific wax Myrtle, ferns. Not as tropical looking, but still beautiful would be mock orange or red dosier dogwood or red flowering currant. Wildflowers will then add more depth of color as well and if you look into native plant sales in your area, you might be able to get seeds for cheap or even free. Showy milkweed is a beautiful native flower that supports monarch butterflies. Other great flowers are Douglas aster, Canadian goldenrod, blue eyed grass. This is just a small list of examples, but willing to provide more examples and help if wanted.
