I'm going through this misery right now. I decided to put in a closet system and started building the cabinets in the garage. Once I got the first carcass built and realized how big it was, I started measuring through the house and realized there was no way to get the cabinet from the garage to the closet. Decided to build it in place. Mine wound up being a bit slapped together because all the planning I had been doing was for setting cabinets so I had to switch gears and trying to make all the pieces I had already cut work for the new approach. I already had a plinth built out of 2x4s, so essentially I just put two pieces against the opposite walls and used screws to anchor into studs and drilled those holes deep enough to plug. Then cut pieces for the top and bottom and wedged them into place and used the next upright piece to screw in from the side. The next bottom and top pieces hide those screws. My original plan had been to have backs on the cabinets, but since I decided to go for built in place, I would up leaving the backs off and just have the wall visible through the cabinets. That meant scribing every single piece I cut and still having to caulk everything. The most miserable part of the whole process has been painting. I just finished the fourth coat of paint (two primes and two finishes) and I'm still getting a pretty blotchy finish and afraid I'll need another coat. More on reddit.com
