I (36f) have never owned a credit card. I have applied at 3 different banks and been rejected. I think one of them asked for a downpayment that would be returned in a year if I remember correctly.
Would I have better luck with Tangerine bank?
Or does anyone have advice for building a credit history/score at my age? I'm a stay at home mom without steady income so maybe that will work against me?
Does anyone know if Tangerine would accept a student application for this card even if you don't reach the minimum income requirement? Full time student right now and also not working so I wouldn't meet the minimum income requirement, but it's such a great card. I've been banking with them for a little over a year now. Thanks
Currently have a Vancity Enviro visa and it's rewards options are not great. I want to start using my credit card for all my purchases and bills, and then just pay it off every payday. I've decided on the tangerine card (I think), and figured I'd just open an account with them and just let the monthly cash back grow in that account. While still staying with my current credit union because I like them and they don't charge me. Does this sound like a relatively simple, low hassle idea? Any drawbacks I should know of? I've been with my current bank account since I was 6 lol so I have no idea about opening up a second bank account.
Basically the title, but I am 18 and going to be starting a new job soon, probably making 45-50k per year, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience getting the tangerine money back card as their first card with no credit history? I know I can get bmo or rbc but the 3 2% categories look pretty good and wouldn’t mind having it if I could since I do most of my banking with them for a couple years now. If not what is a credit score that you got signed up for when you got it?
I'm in a slightly bad debt situation but finally making some significant dent in it.
I owe 1200 $ on Mc, 1900 $ on Visa and 2500 $ on a MBNA that was closed by the lender. All those are 19 %.
On my current salary, I pay 675 $ per month on those cards. Starting in April, I will pay 850 $ per month.
The Tangerine card offers 0 % interest for 6 months on transfers with a 2,5 % fees.
If my math checks out, that's 500 $ less interest in 6 months. But is it worth the hit on my credit score? The risk of a new card?
I hear the Tangerine Moneyback CC is good but hard to qualify for.
Just how difficult is it to get?
Edit: For reference, my current credit scores are ~720 with Credit Karma and Borrowell. I have VISA and AMEX CCs, both of which I had no trouble getting
I'm 19, been working for 3 years now (full-time during summer/holidays and part-time during school) in fast food and made over 25k last year. I have one low rate visa card with a 3k limit which I've had for about a year. I use about $100-300 every month and ofc pay it back in full on time and have a credit score of 734. Should I apply or will I most likely not get approved and just save myself from getting a hard inquiry for no reason.
Hey all,
I just tried to apply for Tangerine's Money-Back Credit Card over the phone. I checked all the boxes—I meet the minimum income of $12k to apply; I have a credit score of over 700; and I have a PC Master Card that's in good standing. Yet I failed the hard- credit score check!! First time I have ever failed a check like this, and besides the worry of how this will affect my score, I just can't seem to figure out why I was rejected!
Has anyone else experienced this before? Really quite bothered by this, as you could imagine. Thanks for any insight :)
Hello,
Today, I received a pre-approval from Tangerine for their Cash-Back credit card with a limit of $22,000!??
I've been a client of theirs for almost 10 years, have multiple savings accounts and a chequing account, and have about $11,000 in my accounts. However, I do not have good credit. I am currently rebuilding after a year long job loss about 6 years ago and then 6 months of unpaid sick leave in 2018, so I defaulted on a couple of credit cards as a result. As of a few days ago, I've managed to get my score back up to 574 and a Below-Average rating (up from Poor).
Why on Earth would they send me this? Everything I can find online suggests a minimum score of close to 700. According to BorrowWell, something limiting my score is I only have one open credit card and no other open credit types. I do have a couple of closed ones that still have a balance but haven't been sent to collections for some reason (even years later).
I would love to have a second card just for the credit history.
Is this just advertising, or is there a chance for some crazy reason they plan to approve me? It does say that there will be a credit check, and I don't want to do that if I'm basically guaranteed to be denied.
Thanks!
Maybe it said “up to $22,000” lol? Either way… if your rebuilding credit this might come useful aaaaaaaand if your unemployed this will sabotage you… lol.
I got an offer with a similar credit limit and took it. It’s helped my credit score as a result but be careful. I think Tangerine offers it when you’ve been keeping high balances on your accounts for a few months. I’d say take it if you can be responsible with the credit card. Remember it’s a business, they’re not doing you a favour but rather seeing you have some money, may spend lots, and then spend years in credit card debt paying high interests to them.
I just compared the two cards offered by Tangerine but got confused.
Neither has annual fee
Both can choose 2 categories with 2% cashback (3 categories if deposit reward to saving)
World Mastercard® has everything that Money-Back has
World Mastercard® offer more features like Mastercard® Travel Rewards* etc. than the other.
Okay, so what's the point of the existence of Money-Back Credit Card? Isn't Tangerine World Mastercard® better than the other in every aspect? Or did I miss something?
I'd like to hear your thoughts about these two cards, thank you!
So Tangerine credit card provides 2% cashback on three merchant categories (eg. Groceries, gas, etc ). The problem is sometimes what you think is groceries is something else, eg. Costco doesn't count as groceries. One category I have is recurring bills. I recently set it up to pay my home/auto insurance. This went through as 3 separate transactions, one for each car plus the house. I checked my account and only two of them were recognized as recurring and the other as 'other' so I only received 0.5% instead of 2% on that one. Of course I called Tangerine but they said there is nothing they can do because it is up to the merchant how they categorize the transaction. I called the insurance and of course they don't really know anything about that and just blamed it on Tangerine. I feel like I am caught in the middle. At this point it is like why have this credit card when I don't know how it will be categorized when I make a purchase. Anyone else feel the same with this card or any other that offers similar benefits?
I was denied for the cash back card last year. Income this year is quite a bit higher at 60k.
Went to apply for the normal cash-back card and they prompt you to get the World Mastercard.
My question is: since I just barely meet the 60k requirement and was previously denied because I have 0 credit history should I even apply for the World Mastercard? Only thing I might use is like an airport lounge once a year or something. Otherwise the benefits seem pretty useless anyway.
"World" does not mean airport lounge. ... i mean not for free.
Yep. The income requirement isn't as strict as most people think. As long as you have credit history and decent credit now you should be fine.
Also, apply for it via greatcanadianrebates for an extra $100 deposited to you bank account upon approval. Banks give sites money for referring custoemrs to them (this is why so many travel blogs shill credit cards), sites like gcr share a cut of thay with you so you go to them and not others.
I’m looking for a new credit card since me and my fiancée I have been with RBC’s student Cards for years, and clearly havnt been getting the benefits one should get with a card.
I was looking at Tangerine and was wondering what peoples personal experiences are with it?
For context: I am 22, working full time, spending about $500-1000 a month on gas, eating out, groceries, etc.
No rent yet, but next year.
Will be travelling to Europe for a month this summer, I understand Tangerine has some benefits for this, but don’t quite get it. If someone could break it down.
I like the no annual fee and others being allowed to have a card for free as well
Credit score is 800.
If anyone has any more information, recommendations or experiences that would be great
Thanks
Any thoughts on Tangerine's money back CC? From reading their website and old Reddit posts, I think they might have reduced their benefits.
I see a lot of credit card recommendations on this subreddit but this Tangerine card never seems to come up.
Is it considered “mid”? It’s free, has great travel benefits, and gives 2% cash back (groceries, restaurants, and gas stations) into my savings account on a monthly basis.
It also gives a confirmation for every purchase that qualities for the 2% discount. With some other cards you’re left guessing whether or not your purchase qualified for the full 2%. For example, I was using another card that did not consider Wal-Mart a grocery store and only gave 0.5% cash back.
I am an 18 year old highschooler who works a part time job, this year I made almost $15,000 so far. I am now looking for a first credit card, and the Tangerine money-back card caught my attention. Is this card a good card for me? And if it isnt, would you reccomend any others?
Update: I unfortunertly did not get approved for the Tangerine, but I was pre-approved for the TD cahs back visa, and I was approved for the simplii finacial card, thanks for everybobody's help
I currently have a CIBC smart account. I need another bank account to share with my wife and tangerine is the bank that is mostly recommended here. I have read forums and visited bank websites and I don't see much difference.
I also have a CIBC Visa infinite which gives 4% cash back on gas and groceries. Yes there is 80,000 annual spend limit, compared to unlimited cashback from Tangerine, but even their world mastercard is only 2%. I don't think I'll ever spend more than 80k a year and exceed that limit.
Should I just stick to CIBC and open a second account? or can you recommend another bank account like TD or Scotia bank?
Is there something that tangerine have that other banks don't?
