After a five month wait, our tatami room bed frame has arrived! This is the King honey oak platform bed (regular height) with Mado headboard. I was really impressed with the quality and sturdiness of the frame, as well as the ease in putting it together. It did truly take longer to unpackage it from all the layers it was packed in (not a bad thing)! I do see this as a buy it for life purchase, so the wait of a few months in the grand scheme of things wasn’t that bad.
Pictured with Leesa natural hybrid mattress, Quince bedding (mostly).
Recently received my Tall Tatami Platform Bed and Tall Bedside Table and thought I’d share pictures, since similar posts on this site helped me decide which company to choose. Note that some pictures are mine, and others were actually provided by Tatami Room when I asked for additional images (shared with permission).
Overall I am impressed with the quality and sturdiness, so I highly recommend this frame and bedside table.
Note: I have mostly left Reddit since Apollo went down, so my responses to comments will likely be few and far between. Leaving this post up so it helps people in the future.
---------- Updates ----------------
(almost) 2 year update (Feb 2024): Still going strong, still recommend, still very happy with the purchase. My answers to all previous comments still stand.
1 year update (March 2023): Still going strong!
Update June 2022: Received the drawers! I’m overall satisfied by them, but they have some flaws, and on top of that I think two wheels got damaged in transit. See below for more details.
---------- OG Review ------------------
Overall things to note:
-
The bed frame took about 20 minutes to put together. Most of that time was reading the directions and making sure the rails and the like were facing the right way.
-
It took approximately three lifetimes to get everything out of the boxes and packaging that they came in. (This ended up being a good thing - the products themselves didn’t have so much as a scratch)
-
The bed frame can be assembled by one able-bodied person
-
I put pads on the bottom of the frame so the floor wouldn’t get scratched, so I can’t do a proper shake test. I’ve walked around on top of it, though, and it hasn’t budged.
-
Didn’t get the headboard because would cover the windows. You can see it in some company-provided pictures and a link to another Reddit review at the bottom though
-
The drawers on the bedside table open very smoothly
-
They took about two months to arrive, but I’m actually still waiting on the storage drawers that I ordered at the same time. However, I’m not remotely upset about any of this. For one, they had a banner on their site saying there would be long delays, so I knew before I even had the items in the cart. Also, when it was time for the frame and bedside table to ship, they reached out and confirmed that I wanted to go through with the order, and they told that the drawers wouldn’t be arriving until May (update: they shipped in May and arrived in early June)
-
Customer service was really responsive. I emailed them a few times, and they were happy to answer my questions. I still can’t believe they sent me additional pictures lol
-
I got the honey oak color. I was expecting it to be a bit more yellow from other Reddit pictures, but it’s definitely more brown. Still very nice. Also, there is one natural finish picture from the company below
-
My mattress is about 10 inches tall
-
Edit: It has two support legs attached to one middle support rail. See comment for more info
-
Update on the drawers: They look great. Most of the drawers are made up of the sturdy wood used in the bed frame, and the colors match exactly. In a nice touch, the top of the front of the drawer actually overlaps with the bottom of the bed frame side rail, so the drawer won’t get lost beneath the frame. However, the bottom of the drawer is particle board, and a small sliver snapped off during assembly. Also, for one of the drawers, a side piece seems to be cut unevenly, because it doesn’t lay flush with the other pieces. (You can zoom in on the “front view with drawers” image below - look at the bottom left corner of the drawer on the right.) In the end, though, l didn’t really care enough, so I didn’t reach out to Customer Service. Edit: I hear scratching against the hardwood when I open one of the drawers. Something must have happened to the wheels in transit, as the box the drawer came in was damaged where the wheels are. (See attached picture “Damaged Drawer Packaging.”) I cannot believe I didn’t realize this earlier. I took the picture because I was worried and thought I’d tested both drawers!
-
Edit: Someone in the comments below got confirmation from Tatami Room that the handles for the drawers are not in the middle (as displayed on their site) but on the top (as displayed by my pictures)
Happy to answer any other questions!

dang you are so thorough. thank you for this. I know I am not the only one who is appreciative.
This is great because it's thorough.
However: We've had same tatami bed for 16-18 months now and did love it, but about 6 months ago it started to creak and has only gotten worse since then. I noticed that some of the glued joists in the support beams (that come pre-assembled) are starting to become unglued, so I wonder if that's part of why it's gotten so creaky.
It's beautiful but I wish we'd bought a Thuma bed instead.
edit: and customer service was great when purchasing, but they have not responded to any emails about the issues at all. :(
I know this is the Thuma sub reddit, but not sure where to share this.
It was just about 6 months to get it LOL but, it is awesome! Set it up last night and it is very nice in quality and color. Very sturdy.
The packaging was impressive. No damages. Just tons of boxes I’m now breaking down.
I got the Yamaguchi king bed frame with the Magari head board.
One thing to know is that you should open up the package that the headboard came in because there’s different instructions. We ended up assembling the whole bed and then realized that we had to backtrack a couple steps in order to fit the headboard into the main frame because we had to remove the original frame. So now I just have a piece of the bottom frame under the bed that I won’t be using since I have the headboard.
Not a huge deal. But it is absolutely awesome and it was worth the wait. Even tho 6 months is insane 🤣
Now I need to find cool art work for above the bed as my previous headboard was way taller. And new night stands hahaha
I’d been looking to replace my metal bed frame with one where the bolts didn’t work their way loose from everyday use when I got bombarded with ads for frames with Japanese or Scandinavian joinery. I know the quality of this joinery, but was cautious about the many Internet companies bombarding social media so I did some more digging and found this company.
I’m so glad I did. First, the bed arrived ahead of schedule - even with back orders/supply chain issues around the world.
Second. Each part of the bed was packaged so well. Shrink-wrapped pieces, further protected in styrofoam and boxes. I think it took longer to unwrap all the pieces than to assemble the bed. Every single piece that came out was beautiful - each surface was sanded smooth and sealed - even the interiors of the notches where the side rails and head/footboards interlock. The 2 rolls of slats were also finished. No unfinished plywood threatening to splinter here.
The pieces interlock for a tight, flawless fit, providing a strong and stable support for my mattress, nothing to wiggle loose. And because the feet are wide, the bed also moves easily across the carpet, making it a breeze for one person to reposition it.
And as an added bonus, the upholstered headboard from my old bed, slid perfectly on the ledge behind my mattress like it was meant to be there. It’s snug & no longer moves about as it did on the frame it was made for (bad fastener design). I’m thrilled because I didn’t want to lose my soft headboard but was so tired of the squeaky metal frame and how the bolts liked to work their way loose from normal use of the bed. Now I get the best of both worlds. Thank you!
This bed is even better than I expected and at several hundred below competitors‘ pricing (and with more styles to choose from.). It really is stunning.
I'm trying to decide between Tatami Room and Thuma, and wanted to know your experiences with both/either. I'm leaning more towards the Tatami Room, but their website makes me a little hesitant, haha. And if you bought a Tatami Room frame, did you buy their mats as well? The mat + shipping for it would end up costing me $500+, so I want to know that it's worth that price.
Ordered the bedframe and headboard on Oct 1, 2024 and received them on February 10, 2025. Super great quality! Feels super sturdy and doesn't creak at all. Absolutely in love with it aside from the fact I chose the wrong color.. Now I need to find a way to sell this before ordering a new one in the right color (honey oak) which means quite some more time before I can fully settle into it. 🤦 Either way, look how pretty! I'm really glad I went with Tatami Room and these styles. Sharing photos here to help anyone else considering ordering because I spent so much time looking at photos of the different colors and styles before ordering myself!
I wanted to share my experience so far with the Tatami Room Tall Platform Bed. I ordered the bed frame with the bedside table and storage drawers at the end of August and it got delivered after 10 weeks. It cost around $2k for everything. The website says delay in processing of orders at 6 to 8 weeks. They were responsive to e-mails after I asked them the status of my order after around 8 weeks so I felt fine that it took longer to arrive. Before the truck left with the bed, they called me again to send an invoice because the original paypal order got cancelled. It took around 5 days from the when the call was made to when it was delivered to me (I live in Southern California). When it arrived, the driver said he wasn't allowed to enter the building so he could only leave the boxes in the lobby of my apartment complex, luckily I had my brother help me in addition to having a wagon for hauling things.
There were multiple boxes, 3 for the bed frame, 1 for the headboard, 2 for the storage drawers, and 1 for the bedside table. The parts were in standard cardboard boxes labeled Lin's Oriental Imports but were packaged well so none of the parts were damaged. In addition to adequate packaging the frame and legs where plastic wrapped. Unboxing was very straightforward and with how there were multiple boxes it was easy to separate and organize the parts before assembly. The storage drawers also require assembly with only an allen key included even though a philips head screw driver is also needed. The bedside table was already fully built.
The assembly was quite easy and simple. You get 4 legs, 4 outside frames, and 1 middle support leg. If you get a headboard, it takes the place of one of the outside frames. The parts have some weight on them so you might need a second person, especially with the headboard. It wasn't completely toolless. You get 4 hex screws for the middle support leg to reinforce the installation. There are nut dowels for the screws where the middle support legs connect to the end frames. They are all metal so it feels secure. They provide an allen key and unless you weren't able to align the holes of the nut dowel to the screw hole of the frame then that's all you might need. Some of the pegs included are to keep the slats in place. I had to use a hammer for the pegs because some of them wouldn't slide in the holes easily, just to keep in mind.
Looking at the whole ensemble, I think I should have sprung for the natural finish because It might have looked better in contrast to my room. That being said, I love the staining and shade of the honey oak. Whenever I look at it, I grow more in love with the color. The frame is well-built and has a nice smooth finish. I don't feel or hear any excessive creaking. Since I got the full size bed, the storage drawers would not fit one side so I had the put the other drawer on the bottom side. It will not push in flush because there's a support leg stopping it from going in all the way. My mattress is just some cheap firm hybrid mattress from wayfair and I don't have any issues with it on the bed frame. It did come with a varnish smell, but to me it's the intoxicating kind, like the gasoline pleasant smell. It wasn't really strong all that much but you know it's the brand new wood furniture smell.
All in all, I've been happy with my purchase and I feel really good in choosing this bed frame. I hope others will find this info useful. Thank you all.
Tall Platform Bed Frame Joinery Bed frame with slats Mado Classic Headboard Bed with bedside table and storage drawersSo i'm settling into an apartment and one of the rooms has tatami mat flooring. I intend to use this as my bedroom.
While looking for apartments, I saw that there still are A LOT of apartments with at least one tatami room so I'm sure there people here who are staying in such places. For these people, I am wondering what you have done with your rooms and if you have tips or suggestions.
I'm thinking if I could get away with western style furniture (i.e. bed frame, desk, chair, etc.) or if it would be a better idea to just roll with it and go japanese style with a futon (and furniture that works with tatami).
If you went western style, how did you make it work? And vice versa.
Thank you!
I've been watching some YouTube shorts showing apartments and houses in Tokyo, and was noticing that most of the properties they showed did not have a tatami room, or only had one. They were still very Japanese in a lot of way, such as having a separate toilet and bathtub, but didn't have tatami rooms. This made me wonder how common it is for people in Japan to still have tatami rooms, and how they use them in daily life. Is it common for people to set up western furniture in their tatami rooms, or do they use them the traditional way if they have them?
When I was in Japan I didn't go into very many normal houses, so it was hard to get a sense of this.
Hi everyone,
I've been looking through a lot of posts on reddit but hope to get a bit further input from everyone. I have deciding between the thuma, silk and snow, tatami room, and burrow chorus for a queen bed. My partner and I prefer a wooden bedframe with a headboard, but are also open to upholstered. The main question is the pricing, longetivity, and comfort/noise. I am based in Oregon and my budget is perferable less than 1500 (but may spend more if convinced!).
Thuma with headboard $1895 (https://www.thuma.co/products/the-bed?variant=40242991038569&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Branded_Thuma_Bamboo_Google_CVR_Brand_Products_Upgrades&utm_adgroup=Brand_Headboard&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAk9itBhASEiwA1my_60IxCB802k9VdAkE46wII1cyvCaP131XOxmxk0pxjHIsLpqwQ2JXMxoCiowQAvD_BwE)
Tatami room dark walnut or natural finish w/ headboard $839 + $335 --> $1174 (https://tatamiroom.com/cgi-local/catalog.pl?category=PLATFORM_BEDS)
Chorus bed upholstered w/ headboard (this one looks good in pictures) $1168 (https://burrow.com/bedroom/beds/chorus-bed?sku=BRBD-BF-CI3-QN-UH-TP-FRSG-WNL&headboard-3-add-on=BRBD-HB-CI3-QN-UH-SG)
Silk and snow wooden bed frame w/ headboard $1170 (https://www.silkandsnow.com/en-us/wooden-bed-frame/?size=queen&product_type=wooden_bedframe&colour=rubberwood)
Please let me know your experiences and thoughts! Appreciate it
Hi all, I ordered my Tatami Room bed on April 1 and was advised of 8-12 week lead times. This was ok at the time. However -and I'm mad at myself for this- I didn't hear anything until I inquired yesterday (13 weeks from order) and was advised that the bed will not be ready until the second week of August. Another 6 weeks, which isn't acceptable for us.
So now I'm looking for alternatives. I've searched this sub plenty and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Ideally, I'm looking for a Japanese joinery bed with a wooden headboard that can ship fairly quickly. The main options I've uncovered:
Silk & Snow: I like them, but I dislike their modern farmhouse-y aesthetic of many small boards being used on both the frame and headboard.
Valyou: the Charm 2.0 looks great, I can deal with a fabric headboard if it's washable and neutral, but this sub has some nightmare stories of quality issues and poor customer service.
Get Laid: I don't love the design of their beds, but they look high-quality.
Thuma: The obvious choice, especially on this forum, but the whole reason I was drawn to Tatami is because of the extreme price point of Thuma. Is it worth $2100 for a king?
Am I missing any good options or does anyone want to recommend or shun one of the above companies?
I’m planning on getting a new king bed for our master bedroom. I can’t decide between tatami room and thuma.
I like low profile beds, thuma essential seems good but I don’t like the pillowboards they offer.
Tatami room has few options, I’m not able to figure out which one to buy.
Any help would be appreciated
Hi all!
I know some folks consider options other than Thuma. I wanted to share that I just purchased the TatamiRoom.com Tall Tatami bed in Honey Oak with the “mado classic” headboard, and I am so happy with it! While it took about 6 weeks to come, it was well worth the wait.
The bed is sturdy, easy to put together, comes packaged very well, and looks great in our room.
The tatami room customer service is also unparalleled. Pin was so helpful when I was choosing a bed. When the bed we ordered became available, Jason called to let me know the bed was here but the headboard hadn’t arrived yet. He also shared the specs of some of the other headboards and beds that they had in stock already. We ended up switching from the Ensui w/ headboard to the Tall Tatami w/ Mado Classic headboard, as the dimensions worked so much better for our space. I have never had such good customer service and I’m so glad we made the switch!
I’ve attached some photos of the headboard and side of the bed. We’re only a week into sleeping on the bed, but so so happy with it!
In a bind. My Tatami Room order has been pending since mid July. The bed will arrive sometime in November if I'm lucky. Strongly considering spending the extra $200 on a Thuma that I can have in a week.
Is Tatami Room that much better?
I looked around the subreddit for images of tatami room bed frames but can’t gauge what the honey oak or natural color looks like. Does anyone have any images in natural light?
I’m looking at the tall platform bed with the classic mado headboard. I originally wanted a thuma but with a 13 in mattress the headboard seemed too short.
Hey all- debating between the two. Leaning toward Tatami but is there anyone that feels strongly toward Thuma?
Also, height is important - what is the height of the Thuma bed vs the Tall Tatami vs Ensui Tatami?
Any photos you are kind to share of your Thuma or Tatami would be much appreciated!
My husband and I are planning to renovate our old washitsu. Our options are either upgrading it to a nice modern style washitsu or changing it into a nice western style room and I cannot for the life of me decide which is better.
Tatami room pros and cons •clean and minimal •kotatsu in the winter •Japanese husband wants to relax there •cheaper (looking at around 70man)
•cannot put much furniture •may not get a lot of use
Western room pros and cons •can be used for multiple purposes (office, small library, reading room) •can put more furniture and personal decorations •feels more at home for me
•more expensive (around 100man) •Japanese husband can’t lie on the ground to relax •no
Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any opinions about which style might be better? Taking all advice!
I ordered the Tall Platform Bed in Natural after seeing so many glowing reviews of Tatami Room. When it arrived, the center support and slats were the wrong color. I contacted them and learned this was intentional. They’ve quietly switched to using a honey-toned wood for these “unseen” parts, regardless of the color you order. Except the slats are visible, even with a mattress.
When I asked if they could replace the parts, they immediately told me to pack it all up and return it for a refund. No apology, no solution. Just indifference. I guess fuck me for wanting my bed to be the same color.
I swear they are doing this on purpose. The return process is tedious and the current wait time is 14 weeks. Most people won’t bother.
On top of that, the quality is underwhelming. The finish is uneven, the wood feels plasticky, and one of the corners doesn’t fit right.
I’m too exhausted to deal with repacking this bed after waiting so long, but I want to warn others. This company is deceptive, dismissive, and I regret giving them a chance instead of just getting a Thuma.
I'm moving into a new house (rental) that comes with a tatami room. The first apartment I stayed in Japan also had a tatami room, and we got a bed bug (dani) issue there and I still haven't recovered from that trauma. This time I want to make sure to take all necessary measures to prevent that ever happening again. Could you please share any tips or insights you have on how to take care of a tatami room? Any recommendations for sprays or products that could help?
The 6-tatami room in the new house overlooks a small garden, which might increase the chances of pests.
//I chose this house despite previous negative experiences because beside the tatami room, everything else is perfect.
My apartment has a tatami room which my pred told me serves as the bedroom. I did some googling and apparently they can be kind of finicky to care for? I was hoping to get a western style bed frame for under-bed storage since my new place is tiny and I will be trying to utilize every inch that I can. But I read that tatami will warp under the weight of a bed frame. So then I thought of area rugs to protect the tatami from potential dents, but then I read that the squares can mold if you don't let the floor breathe! So now I'm worried about losing an entire room of potential space since it seems like I won't be able to safely keep anything on this floor (like a bed frame or dresser drawer). So does anyone with a tatami floor have any care tips they can share? I was really banking on area rugs saving me, but if the floor is just going to mold underneath them, then am I just SOL and stuck with an entire room of dead floor space? What about those protector covers that go around each furniture leg like a sock? Or those coaster things that go under the corners to help slide things across the room? I'm really not worried about aesthetics here, I'll plop things on cut up cardboard if it means keeping the tatami dent and mold free!
