In a nutshell: tcmtests: best for test-taking prep HB Kim: good for in-depth learning and review tcmstudy: good for general overview tcmreview: good for prioritizing what info will show up on exams If you had to choose only one, tcmtests is the best since it has questions that are very similar to what they might ask on the boards. The practice tests are purposefully harder than on the real test, but they also have question categories arranged from easy to hard that you can take to build yourself up (also helps for test-taking endurance). It also gives you detailed explanations as to why you got an answer wrong. If your scores are consistently around 75%-80% on the mock exam, I'd say that's very promising for the actual thing. NCCAOM changes the subject focus on their test questions every April and October, and tcmtests has the latest test trends so you can have a better idea about what to study for. I highly recommend making a study guide out of this since I've had questions come up on the exams that were exactly what was in the test trends. Unfortunately, tcmtests no longer offers a free day on the first Tuesday of each month, so now it's $5. Since I'm still studying for my last board, I'll give my opinions on the other courses and materials I've used in case you want to try them out along with tcmtests. For Foundations I only used tcmtests and passed pretty easily. Biomed was harder, but on top of tcmtests I looked up NCLEX study material to fill in some knowledge gaps like lab values and pharmacology. I think it would've taken me less tries if I used tcmreview at this time, since they have a ton of great charts for things like medical red flags or ethics, and the info is very concise. Herbology was a painful one for me since I just could not understand how the pieces fit together, so I had to study as if I was back to square one. tcmstudy was the biggest MVP here for surface-level review. The videos are short with a good amount of visuals and a bit of humor, and he presents the info in a way that's simple and takes little effort to recall. What especially helped was the compare and contrast, since my biggest trouble was differentiating between herbs and formulas with very similar functions. The single herbs videos are free as well as the practice quizzes on his site, but there's also a formulas course you can buy one time and watch the videos as many times as you like (I love the non-subscription part of this the most). Also, there are audio files of the video lectures, so it made it convenient for daily casual study while doing other things like driving or washing dishes. After I got back on my feet with the basics I used HB Kim extensively. He has much longer lecture-style videos than tcmstudy but he goes much more in-depth. It's worth taking notes while watching since there's just so much information. There's a lot more compare/contrast and talking about why things works the way they do. He also gives plenty of side info, which your mileage may vary if that's distracting or if that will help you remember things better, but if you're one of those people who remembers things better with fun facts, HB Kim is great for that. He also has downloadable worksheets and he goes through the answers within the lecture videos. There's a mix of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and matching, which helps to break up the monotony of pure multiple choice in my opinion. All of his charts are extremely well-organized and saved me so much headache with trying to understand why herbs fit together in a formula the way they do. Also, his slides for acupuncture have great visual aids since the point location pictures have very detailed labeling (moreso than Deadman) for things like the cun between points on different meridians and anatomical landmarks relative to each other. Right now I'm studying for the acupuncture board, and I'm trying out tcmreview for that (on top of everything else). From what I've seen so far, the videos prioritize the most important things to study for your board, so it's great for if you're short on time and need the most essential info. The course is self-paced and you can go through videos and quizzes in your own time, but if you need a study schedule to adhere to, it has a syllabus. I wish it went more in-depth with ways to memorize since it mostly states info as it is, but if that isn't an issue for you, the handouts show you exactly what you need to know with no extras. I think this would be good if you're feeling pretty solid in your studies and you're good at cold memorization. I also have the acupuncture workbook from them, which basically has all the handouts all in one place and makes highlighting and writing notes easier on paper. As for tcmreview for Biomed, I can't comment on how good the lecture videos might be since I haven't watched them, but I do know that the handouts for things like red flags and scope of practice were crucial for the Biomed board. tcmtests likes to present the questions anecdotally and only had bits and pieces about it in their wrong answer explanations, so having all the info stated clearly saved me a lot of trouble. what year of school are you? my ... on their free days whenever you have a chance. get a grasp of your learning /studying style and focus on that. how school prepares you varies - the passing rates effect accreditation so a lot of schools care a lot. still i had bad teachers/classes and spent most of my time studying by myself. i recommend finding facebook groups where people will share info.
