An actual checking account with a real bank or credit union. Venmo is fine for receiving payments, then he can transfer it to his bank account. Money shouldn't be held in Venmo for any longer than it takes to log into the app and initiate a transfer after receiving it. Venmo and other similar apps are not FDIC insured, so if they go tits up tomorrow, any money held in there is gone. Answer from t-poke on reddit.com

Teen VENMO account Alert!!! Do not use these online accounts!
Depending on how it was processed (either via the account or via the card) they might not grant the claim. The distance also doesn't matter if it's an online purchase or not. Buying something from California when you live in the midwest isn't fraudulent. However: Buying something IN PERSON in california when you live in the midwest is fraudulent. I would double check what the payment is for, while it's good to trust your kid, sometimes kids buy things they don't want their parent's to know about Source: I was a kid once. More on reddit.com

r/personalfinance on Reddit: Teen Account- Venmo or other?
May 16, 2025 -
Teen is mowing lawns this summer for some extra spending money.
We started with people paying my Venmo- but he needs some autonomy to learn.
Looked into teen Venmo + debit card. Concern that he canโt really save money from there and will have access to all of it (and the safety of that?)
Other simple ideas that we can help manage and make it easy for neighbors to pay?
Venmo really seems like the easiest person to person payment, just wanting to make sure Iโm not missing any potential headaches! Thanks!

Zelle with a savings account? Money probably isn't huge, and getting experience moving money in and out of Venmo perhaps isn't the worst idea, either.
