Residential Telephone Wiring Basics
With houses and other small, residential buildings, the phone company supplies wires from their pole or underground lines, and terminates them in a small junction box or demarc (as in demarcation, and pronounced "DEE-mark" by the guys whose pants hang too low) or network interface device or NID (pronounced "nid" by the aforementioned low-hanging-pants guys), attached to the outside of the house.

What is the wiring pinout on this telephone jack?
The active telephone or dsl pair (normally Blue and white) goes to the middle two pins of the telephone socket. So 2,3 if 4 pins. Or 3,4 if 6 pins, or 4,5 if 8 pins.. At least one other socket is daisy chained from this one. You can leave it like that if you wish to put the modem elsewhere? For installing ethernet, installing pre-made ethernet cable is easiest... you can put them into wall plates with these couplers... https://www.bunnings.com.au/deta-ethernet-grid-plate-insert-rj45-8p8c_p4360450?store=7345&gclid=CjwKCAjw15eqBhBZEiwAbDomEkkCxZRybltoVMRStQgCWx5j1eSk8ipj7RGpydC9auUo5CPWJf43BBoCj40QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds More on reddit.com

What is this box on the side of my house?
Looks like a "Telephone Network Interface" if I had to made a guess. It shouldn't have anything to do with your internet but it could if you have DSL or something. If you have home phone they may stop working if you take this off. More on reddit.com
