You may order a driver record for a Texas driver license, commercial driver license or identification card online or by mail. The Department cannot provide in-person driver record services at any of our locations.
About the Texas Driving Record and Defensive Driving Course
The Type 3A driving record is a certified record of your driving history. It is acceptable for submission alongside a defensive driving course certificate. Our Texas defensive driving course allows you to dismiss a traffic ticket/citation, earn a car insurance discount, fulfill court requirements, and can be used for employment purposes. The 6-hour course is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. After completion of the course we will mail you a physical copy of the certificate for submission purposes.

November 24, 2024Taking a driver safety course to deal with a speeding ticket. Do I need to pay for the driving record, too?
Just went through this a few months ago. Yes you can just pay $10 plus a $2 filing fee to the DPS for your driving record. The $45 you pay to the DD school for the course and record includes their own filing fee, so you can possibly save a few bucks if you do it yourself. I just paid them for eveything because I'm lazy and wanted it all to be over with as quickly as possible. Upon completion the school will send you two copies of your completion certificate and a copy of your driving record. One copy is for the court and the other is for your insurance company. Bring your record and cert to court and they'll dismiss the ticket. Here's the instructions from the online course I took. Go to texas.gov Under the TOP SERVICES, click where it says Driver Records and fill out the form. (For ticket dismissal purposes, you’ll need TYPE 3A.) If I was you my next step would be to email every email address you can find here https://www.txdmv.gov/about-us To add to that I would probably go on Linkedin and find the people listed in that page (you have to click to see but contact all the people). I've checked a few of the online safety courses and they all have some variation of $25 for the course or $45 for course plus record. When I was at the court they gave me a form to order the record version 3A for $10 (and it appears I can order it online here, too: http://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/driverrecords.htm). Also they said something about not ordering the record until after I've completed the safety course, does that sound right?
Am I correct that all I need to do is pay the $25 for the safety course and separately pay $10 to the DPS for the driver record?
EDIT I guess the title question is kind of ambiguous. Do I need to pay for the driving record fee from the safety course provider or are they just adding a fee and filling out the $10 DPS record form online?
Also I already paid the court costs for the ticket. I'm just trying to get the other things taken care of without being tricked into paying $20 more than I need to for the course, if that's what they're doing.

You pay for everything. Including any court costs and fees. You're not getting out cheaper than paying for the ticket. You're just keeping it off your record.
