When to Fertilize Lawn in Texas | TruGreen
September 2, 2025 - In South Texas, fall fertilization can extend into November if the lawn remains active. Adding iron at this time can improve winter color without encouraging excessive growth. Apply fertilizer when daytime highs are in the 70s and nighttime lows drop below 60 °F. For more seasonal tips, explore TruGreen’s summer lawn care guide and lawn fertilizer basics.

DFW/TX - Annual lawn care plan
Here's my schedule that I've lived by for 15 years without fail (DFW): Early Spring: Liquid Pre-emergent Mid-Spring: Broadcast insect killer because I hate ants and grubs Mid-Spring: Broadcast Feed (no weed and feed, just 15-5-10) Summer: Broadcast Ironite (if you want it greener)' Early Fall: Liquid Pre-emergent I might throw in another fertilizer application in late summer, early fall if needed, but for the most part, if it looks healthy, you don't really need much. A couple of years ago I had some nutsedge infestation (I blame lawn guys I had hired because I'd never had nutsedge before and applied Image 2x which knocked it out fast). Pull weeds manually as you see them. Mow weekly. I've had a nearly weed-free and green lawn since then. More on reddit.com
New homeowner in DFW Texas, how to fix lawn for new year?
Hey neighbor, DFW here too. First of all, it is hard to fix everything overnight. Lawn care is a journey in which you'll make progress and improve season after season. Right now, there's not a lot you can do treatment wise. You could fire up the mower or get your weedwacker out and knock down the weeds -- as we get colder weather next week, it probably won't come back for a while -- it will still be green against your dormant bermuda, but it won't be overgrown. Once the soil temp approaches 55 degrees in the spring (usually between Mar 1- 15) you'll need to apply prodiamine -- this will help prevent spring/summer crabgrass. Pre-emergent is a preventative measure to block germination, it won't do anything for weed seeds that have already germinated. Meaning you'll see these same weeds again around that same time. In early September you'll apply prodiamine again to prevent these next year. Looking from your pictures, I'd think about two other things: The second picture has bare dirt near the concrete -- does that area get 8 hours of sun in the summer? If not, it won't grow bermuda, you may have to think of an alternative -- pavers, flower bed, etc. Look for problematic drainage areas. We're getting a lot of rain, are there areas that don't drain well, you may need to address in the spring Good luck! More on reddit.com

r/lawncare on Reddit: DFW/TX - Annual lawn care plan
February 9, 2022 -
Hello, in the past, I've used a lawn care service for taking care of my yard (under 5000 sq ft, bermuda grass). This year, I decided to try it out myself - how good is Scott's 4 step program? https://program.scotts.com/
For my yard, it recommends
Early spring - Scotts Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food (in april - so not a pre-emergent!)
Late Spring - Scotts Turf Builder Thick'R Lawn Bermudagrass (May-June)
Early summer - Scotts Turf Builder Summerguard Lawn Food with Insect Control (July)
Fall - Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed (Late Aug)
Does this make sense? or would you recommend a different plan?
Thanks!

Looks good, but you want to add a preemergent at least in early spring and early fall. I normally do preemergent at the start of each season and don’t have problems with weeds.

Perfect Lawn Maintenance Timing: When to Fertilize, Water, Spray Weeds and More in Texas
September 8, 2025 - It is important to coordinate the timing of your lawn maintenance with lawn care applications and regular watering. We recommend not mowing for 24 hours after a fertilization and weed control application. Ideally, you will not mow the same day that you water your yard. The best time to water your lawn can be a touchy subject in Texas because many communities put water restrictions in place, especially during summer.
