DMV is for license and id. Look up Texas title and registration it’s a different office. Sales tax will be the value of the vehicle and yes you need insurance proof when you go. Once you pay the sales tax and the yearly registration that day they will give you plates and mail you a Texas title. More on reddit.com

short answer. yes. used private sale you will save on fees and setup for sure. taxes are a maybe, depending on paperwork and price paid (you can lie on sales price with some risk). buyer shows the sales receipt at dmv and they calculate taxes at 6.5% buying used from a dealer won’t save you much on fees or taxes. the only savings is from depreciation.
