I might be moving up to Roger’s Park. I don’t know the neighborhood super well, but some friends love it and some friends have told me some blocks are getting rougher. Does anybody know which (if any) parts of the neighborhood I should avoid while apartment hunting? I’ve never had an issue in the neighborhood so I’m not sure how real the concern is
I am moving to North Chicago next year and I am considering Rogers Park because of the lower rent costs compared to Evanston. My question is, how safe is it? I currently live in New Zealand which is the second safest country in the world, and I have no idea what to expect.
I have read some other people saying that Rogers Park station has a lot of dodgy people around it at night, is this true? Are there any other areas to avoid?
After being in the city for a few years, I’m considering moving from the North Side Rogers Park/Edgewater to the South Side (looking at South Shore, Woodlawn, Chatham) due to affordability and I’m Black and would like to live near more other Black people.
I found a place that seems perfect as I’m looking for 1 BR in the 1300-1500 range. But this place is not too far from the notorious Oblock. I drove around the neighborhood a few weeks ago and it didn’t seem that bad.
I feel like many people associate predominantly Black with being totally unsafe.
TLDR: Is there anyone that has done ok living in Woodlawn? Also, how concerned should I be for my new-ish vehicle if I park on the street? Are there other Southside neighborhoods that are semi-affordable and semi-safe that you recommend?
Thanks
Edit: I did not intend for this to be a conversation about class and race. (I think I might be too sensitive for Reddit lol). Am I from Chicago? No. Have I experienced poverty for most of my life until now? Yes.
Race, class, crime, poverty, redlining, and all that are linked in very complex ways. No doubt.
My main motivation was that I found a place that was AMAZING, aside from location and I am trying to find out if I can could make it work.
Trying to explain my background and perspective seems to make things worse.
I’ve gotten a lot of great recommendations that I will look into and useful info about places to stay away from. This is a giant city and it helps to figure out how to narrow my search.
