The Circus, Bath

October 22, 2025 - The central area was originally paved with stone setts, covering a reservoir in the centre that supplied water to the houses. In 1800 the Circus residents enclosed the central part of the open space as a garden. Now, the central area is grassed over and is home to a group of five large plane trees, which are believed to date to around 1820.

When viewed from the air, the Circus, along with Queen Square and adjoining Gay Street, form a key shape, which is a masonic symbol similar to those that adorn many of Wood's buildings. The Circus is a Georgian masterpiece. Built to John Wood the Elder's design and completed in 1768, it's said to have been inspired by the Colosseum in Rome. Arranged over three equal terraces, the 33 mansions form a circle and overlook a grassy disc populated by plane trees.

Nowhere in Bath is quite as eye-catching as the magnificent Royal Crescent and this circle of Georgian houses, the King’s Circus. The idea behind Bath’s design was quite revolutionary at the time.

As its name suggests, The Circus itself is a circle of magnificent Bath architecture. This Circus consists of a central round lawn, shaded in summer by a group of majestic plane trees which are over two centuries old. Formed by three curved terraces of immaculate, Grade I listed Georgian townhouses, the Circus, Gay Street and Queen Square connections form a key shape.

May 8, 2019 - If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Bath, you will most certainly find the Circus. If you want to find the Assembly Rooms (aka the Fashion Museum) or the Royal Crescent, I would be shocked if you didn’t walk through the Circus to get there. Originally called the King’s Circus, it was designed by English architect John Wood, the Elder.

Bathrooms also feature luxurious updates – yet still retain a certain Georgian splendour fit for the stately house. Wood drank in the latest architectural ideas while working in London in his teens and early twenties. Passionately embracing Palladianism, he returned to Bath in 1727 afire to transform his native city. His head bursting with ideas, Wood had already devised a grandiose scheme. It would include a grand circus for the exhibition of sports, together with a royal forum and imperial gymnasium.

John Wood the Elder was a fascinating individual whose interests bled outside architecture and into British myths and mysticism. He was known for writing extensively on druidism, neo-druidism (which was undergoing a romantic revival at the time), and the legendary figure, Bladud, a mythical King of Britons who was said to have founded Bath (learn more in our article on Bath's Roman Baths).

It s like entering the quiet of an elegant and refined square typical of the Victorian period... the houses are basically identical but this is certainly part of the charm... in my opinion the Circus really reflects the soul of Bath, quiet, elegant, a bit retro, simply ..
