r/TEFL on Reddit: Using Google Translate in the classroom?
December 22, 2022 -
I have been using Google Translate to clarify hard-to-explain words in my classes. For example, the word "astounded." I feel that I could either spend a good 10 minutes trying to explain the word or I could just find out the translation using Google and get on with the lesson. My boss is of the opinion that I should never use it in class, because "that's what a big part of what teaching is" (spending a considerable amount of time trying to explain words). I feel that it's a better use of time to translate it right away and not use up so much time explaining individual words.
I'm working at a conversation school. I know very little of the native language.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

I fall on the side of using direct translation as little as possible. It's more useful for concepts rather than single words. When I was learning English as a kid, there was no other language to translate to or from. Astounded is also a fairly simple adjective right, if they are coming across that word, I imagine they have a grasp on synonyms. Astounded is a synonym for shocked, it's means you were really shocked. Then you can give a simple example, I opened the door to see 15 cats, I was astounded. What would astound you? Why would that take 10 minutes? Translation tends to "skip" the whole learning process and often you come across words where you can't just directly translate them.

The question I'd have (since you don't know their language) is... how do you know the Google translation is actually correct? And that it has the same/similar usage in both languages?
