"Scared as You"
"Scared as You"
I've seen loads of posts on people's interpretation of the lyrics of Friday I'm in love, but there's a reason it's my favourite Cure song, if not my favourite song full-stop.
Around two years ago I left a toxic relationship and although looking back on it now ending it was the best course of action, everything about our connection was so fiery and electric.
We always used to listen to this song together and I came to interpret it as a love song on the subject of a tumultuous relationship, no matter how bad things got (days of the week in the song), whatever happened, on Friday, at the end of it all, I'm in love.
Saturday, wait - don't want this feeling to end.
Sunday always comes too late, but Friday, I never hesitate, I'm back there, in love. No matter what.
Anybody else interpret it this way? Seen loads of stuff about it being an ode to Friday and living for the weekend or whatever but, for me, I never saw it that way.
[cocaine habit] I don't care if Monday's blue (heroin craving)
Tuesday's grey (cocaine plus heroin) and Wednesday too (cocaine plus heroin)
Thursday, I don't care about you (heroin habit)
It's Friday, I'm in love (cocaine high)
[heroin habit] Monday you (cocaine habit) can fall apart (heroin craving)
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart (add cocaine to heroin syringe)
Oh, Thursday doesn't even start (no heroin)
It's Friday, I'm in love (cocaine high)
[both habits] Saturday, wait (shoot heroin)
And Sunday (God cocaine) always comes too late (sold soul = heroin addict)
But Friday, never hesitate (jump = shoot cocaine)
[cocaine habit becoming addicted to heroin habit] I don't care if Monday's black (heroin)
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack (heroin)
Thursday, never looking back (from cocaine addiction to heroin addiction)
It's Friday, I'm in love (cocaine high)
[heroin habit] Monday you can hold your head (headache = heroin)
Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed (heroin)
Or Thursday watch the walls instead (heroin)
It's Friday, I'm in love (cocaine high)
[both habits] Saturday, wait (shoot heroin)
And Sunday (God cocaine) always comes too late (sold soul = heroin addict)(cocaine heroin cycle)
But Friday, never hesitate (shoot cocaine)
[heroin habit] Dressed up to the eyes (cocaine getting married to heroin)
It's a wonderful surprise (cocaine syringe)
To see your shoes (shoot cocaine) and your spirits rise (cocaine high)
Throw out your frown (from heroin to cocaine)
And just smile (shoot cocaine) at the sound (cocaine high)
Sleek (cocaine) as a [shiek] (oil = heroin), spinning 'round and 'round (cocaine heroin cycle)
Always take a big bite (Ouroboros = heroin eats cocaine)
It's such a gorgeous sight (cocaine high)
To see you eat in the middle of the night (3AM heroin eats cocaine)
You can never get enough (heroin addict = no satisfaction)
Enough of this stuff (heroin)
It's Friday, I'm in love (cocaine high)(cocaine heroin cycle)
