The Good Dinosaur

In isolation, the Good Dinosaur is an okay film. In context, it was a massive disappointment. When the film was originally announced, it was billed as an exploration of what would happen if dinosaurs never went extinct, and existed alongside humans in modern-day society...how might society be structured differently? What kind of technology would modern day dinosaurs invent and use? Evidently they could never get the idea off the ground, because the final film was the most bare-bones, uninteresting version of that premise. We see a single dinosaur family doing stone-age farming, and Arlo interacting with one human that acts like a dog - that's about it. The photorealistic landscapes also just did not work, it was way too much effort put into the wrong area of the film and ironically just made the dinosaurs look even worse in comparison. Imagine a Godzilla film where the VFX artists put insane detail into a photorealistic CGI city to destroy, but the main character design of Godzilla looks super cartoony and goofy. This is the first review I’ve seen actually pointing out what a terrible father Poppa Henry is. Like, Jesus Christ, his actions are misguided at best and abusive at worst. And yeah, the whole “the mother thinks he’s Henry at the end” thing is so stupid. My sister and I laughed out loud while watching this because of how dumb it was. I really can’t imagine what Pixar was thinking when they actually released this dumpster fire, especially after one of their most acclaimed movies ever, Inside Out. More on reddit.com
