Spanning a period of 85 years, we have four films named The Mummy; all produced by Universal yet all very different.
1932: Created for their rising star Boris Karloff, the original Mummy film was one of the first films to be included in Universal's influential Monsters canon. While not as fondly remembered as many of the others, the film has various unforgettable moments (Imhotep's backstory, the opening scene showcasing Jack Pierce's incredible makeup work) and is one of Karloff's very best performances.
1959: Hammer's third reimagining of the classic Universal monsters, following the enormous success of Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula. Like those two masterpieces, this film starred Peter Cushing as the hero and Christopher Lee as the titular villain. It took more inspiration from the Kharis-based Universal sequels rather than the 1932 film, but did well to update the dusty tale into a technicolor world.
1999: This film shifted the focal genre from horror to action. It still had its fair share of dark moments (scarabs under the skin, a zombie-like villain) but managed to blend just about every genre and tone (action, adventure, horror, mystery, comedy, romance). The film had something for everyone and therefore became a smash-hit, and one of Brendan Fraser's best remembered roles.
2017: Produced with the intention of being the initial film in a new cinematic universe, this iteration of The Mummy continued the action trend and cast megastar Tom Cruise as the hero. Universal's ambitions were too lofty and resulted in a reported $100 million loss. The Dark Universe died before it even left the gate.
