Design and Evaluation of a Data-Driven Password Meter | Proceedings of the 2017 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
This meter combines neural networks and numerous carefully combined heuristics to score passwords and generate data-driven text feedback about the user's password. We describe the meter's iterative development and final design.

To meet password selection criteria of a server, a user occasionally needs to provide multiple choices of password candidates to an on-line password meter, but such user-chosen candidates tend to be derived from the user’s previous passwords—the meter may have a high chance to acquire information about a user’s passwords employed for various purposes.

From Very Weak to Very Strong: Analyzing Password-Strength Meters
A password-strength meter judges how a user-chosen password will stand up to a hacking attempt. On many websites password-strength meters show the user a visual or verbal cue for the relative strength of their password. The intention is to lead the user to select a more secure password.

A Password Meter without Password Exposure
January 6, 2021 - Our experiment results demonstrate that the running time of the proposed meter is around 60 s in a conventional desktop server, expecting better performance in high-end hardware, with an FHE scheme in HElib library where parameters support at least 80-bit security. We believe the proposed method can be further explored and used for a password metering in case that password secrecy is very important—the user’s password candidates should not be exposed to the meter and also an internal mechanism of password metering should not be disclosed to users and any other third parties.

How Does Your Password Measure Up? The Effect of Strength Meters on Password Creation | USENIX
We present a 2,931-subject study of password creation in the presence of 14 password meters. We found that meters with a variety of visual appearances led users to create longer passwords. However, significant increases in resistance to a password-cracking algorithm were only achieved using meters that scored passwords stringently.
