2 weeks ago someone in my family recommended I read “the Phoenix project”. It surprised me because they weren’t even IT people but said it was a wonderful piece of non-fiction fiction about the IT world.
I’m a few hours into the audiobook and it’s amazing. It’s all about the politics and workplace issues that we encounter day to day. Devs blaming sysadmins who blame managers for lack of funding or unrealistic goals.
It follows the lead character through a sudden promotion in the middle of a turbulent time of the business with critical systems failing and new projects needing to be delivered.
Just the few hours I have heard so far are already helping me mentally distance myself from workloads and how to handle other managers and clients. Sometimes we get wrapped up in things and end up left holding the weight of the business on our shoulders.
Any other books that aren’t too dry that you recommend?
