New PD image resource: “Public Domain Image Archive”, a curated collection of 10k+ out-of-copyright historical images. Some very cool browsing interfaces! Well sourced, and with good re-usage info.
It's another very useful resource, but still contains some of the same (slightly infuriating) problems which other resources seem to be happy to live with - artists, especially some notable ones, aren't credited, with the images being refereed to as 'by Anonymous', making searches for specific creators hit or miss. If the site is simply reusing information from online sources this is understandable, but still... some of the images are signed. There are also very notable works omitted - a search for "curate's egg" doesn't turn up the source of the saying, although the drawing has been referenced somewhat extensively. A good start, all the same, and it can always improve in future. Really not sure how I feel about the search interface at the moment, though... I'll have to return to the site later and ponder why that feels somewhat awkward. More on reddit.com
public domain and reviews
Unless something has changed, Amazon merges all reviews for a given PD work together, and they appear on each listing. That means that, if you’ve published a common one, you will eventually find many bad reviews. That’s because there have been a great many hastily thrown together PD works on the platform, and the reviews reflect that. In other words, if you were to publish an edition of Dracula today, you’ll find thousands of reviews on your book’s page that complain of quality issues from other editions that predate yours, and will continue to populate from editions of the same book that follow. This makes it tough to find much success publishing public domain works via KDP. Probably partly by design, as it effectively shunts them off into a nether realm to struggle together. I just found this site (PICRYL) and yes they seem to charge for high res images. BUT - they usually quote the source where the image came from so you can go the to source and look for the image there for free. (Because they got it from there for free.) You could also try a search by image to find it on another site. So you can use the site to search for free images but not as a free source. Or you can just give them some money to support them for providing you this helpful service. More on reddit.com
Anyone been to Public Domain?
I haven’t been to the main room but I’ve been to the more casual neon tiger that’s in the back. It’s more simple with more straightforward cocktails and slushes but they were balanced and I would go back. It definitely made me more likely to try the main room. Most of the bad reviews seem to be people complaining about service and waiting for tables. I read that as new business still figuring processes out in the first few months. More on reddit.com

February 9, 2022 - As always, I'm interspersing this post with some lovely public domain images. I found these all through the Public Domain Review, which is also where I've found a lot of the images in previous years' posts. Happy Public Domain Day! As of today, works from 1926 have entered the public…

April 3, 2014 - A place like Project Gutenberg is fascinating for its massive amount of material, true enough, but a place that curates and examines the world of public domain information is perhaps even more exciting. That’s what The Public Domain Review is, in essence, and I’ve been eating it up all week.
