Jim Carrey's Serious Roles...
He does play serious quite well. Since his comedic roles were traditionally physically demanding on him and he is approaching his mid-50s, I think he likely will opt for more serious stuff (or at least more subtle/subdued humor).

First off, if you haven’t seen The Truman Show, please do as soon as possible. It’s such a remarkable film about heartbreak and how others can corrupt someone’s life, and is brilliantly led by Jim Carrey. Carrey’s performance as Truman is one of the most under-recognized performances in terms of when it comes to the movie community imo. Sure he won some awards along with the whole film itself, but I feel like not enough people talk about it. He has the perfect balance of comedy and tragedy in this and his incredible job makes his character, as well as the world, feel so incredibly real. Once Truman begins to realize what’s going on, he’s sort of in a trance of what’s real and not real and one of my all time favorite scenes in any movie takes place soon after this. While Truman’s confronting his wife after slowly uncovering the false relationship he had been in all this time and how his life had been set up in a way where he doesn’t, and never did, have any control over it. Carrey’s delivery and body language is so chilling based around the context of what’s happening, and the director’s choice to have his wife seemingly barely even notice Truman’s state of mind makes it even more depressing. I can’t get over how incredible the scene is where he says “WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING TO?!!”. Nearly made me tear up the first time I saw it and I was literally jaw-dropped. It’s just so amazing.
I have to rewatch this ASAP.
I enjoyed the Truman Show a lot. I loved the questions that it posed, how it focused on character and didn't spend too much time on the outside world. Everyone did a good job, but for me, Jim Carrey often took me out of it.
I think the choice was well thought out. There were times I really liked him, I thought he portrayed a vulnerability or innocence at times very well. I even think the idea of a comedian was probably the best direction. But for me he went into 'Jim Carrey' mode a few too many times. Once in the car when he suspects something with loops; even when he tells Kristof he'd have to kill him, I hear Ace Ventura, or his character from Liar Liar. I know you have to separate the actor from character, but for me, too much of that manic energy of his creeps in.
I put it on the director more, to reign that in. I think someone akin to Matt Damon, or even DiCaprio might have done better. I understand that might be part of the point as well, that his reactions seem out of place in the world built around him, but to me Carrey doesn't hit some of the more subtler acting mannerisms that might have been required. I know Robin Williams was attached at one point, but I don't think he'd be the answer.
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but am I the only one who had this issue?
