First ep down. The exposition is kinda "nail on the head", but I'm hoping most of it is first-episode syndrome. I'm thinking it'll settle down once it picks up some steam. Mainly because it feels like they're trying to get through a lot of the introduction stuff quickly, and when it's not hammering you with exposition, the acting is just fine. In a lot of ways, it felt like watching cutscenes from the games. The fighting is "holy fuck" good. It's brutal, and very well choreographed (though there were a lot of those "pause and stare" moments during the last fight scene). It is damn hypnotic, and I was already saying "fuck yeah, Geralt". So if all else fails, I'm just gonna enjoy that shit thoroughly. Henry Cavill was a great pick for this. Looking at Geralt specifically, the acting, the voice, and fighting, there's nothing negative I can say about the performance. I'm very happy about that. Two years later, my feeling is the same: what a pilot! Emma Appleton is amazing, obviously, but Lars Mikkelsen is also extremely good as Stregobor and his charisma brought life to the character - and brought death to others…can’t wait to see him more in S2 btw. Although rediscovering The Lesser Evil through the screen was an amazing experience, I’d say my highlight of the episode is the sack of Cintra, actually. It jumps from tenderness to terror to sadness to horror. This is the event that starts it all, it made sense to make it important in the show. More on reddit.com

A witcher is an order of monster hunters who get abilities like superior speed and reflexes, immunity to diseases and the ability to consume potions and elixirs that would kill a normal human. They become witchers in childhood through an agonizing ritual that kills most of them. In folklore they're said to be emotionless, greedy and barely better than monsters themselves. The question of whether Renfri is actually cursed is an open one. It's suggested that it was belief that she was cursed that actually created a curse, and the sorcerer is making things up after the fact to justify his prejudice. This is a central tenet of the Witcher universe- that the worst monsters come about from human greed, lust and rage. Yet there are unsettling things about her. Geralt thinks that her teeth look like a predator's, but when she asks if she's a monster, he says no. Yet at certain points he grabs his medallion as if it's shaking- which it does in the presence of magic or danger, and she's resistant to magic. So I think there is something about her that was either blessed or cursed, but taken as a curse with tragic results. Stregobor compares her to Falka, a princess who was cast out when her father remarried and became a legendary rebel- and possibly one of Ciri's ancestors. Her name will come up from time to time. In the books, Renfri runs with a band of seven gnomes- her story is like a f'ed up Snow White retelling. And Ciri has parallels to both Falka and Renfri. However Renfri says nothing about Ciri- she can't prophesy. The show obviously did that to tie her in to the main theme of destiny. I have no idea why the show decided to skip around timelines so much. Supposedly it was inspired by the movie Dunkirk. More on reddit.com
