I initially thought it was the same as "child", but i've seen people using this word to refer to adults too. What being a kid actually means?

The literal meaning is “child” or “underage person” but it can also mean “relatively young person”. So you could call even a person in their early 20s a “kid” if you wanted to emphasize their youth compared to a fully “mature” person. A parent may also use it to refer to their children even if they’re adults now.
