'They're', 'there', 'their' - all of them have the same pronunciation. That's what I've learnt from different dictionaries. However, I've just found in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online that in American English 'they're' is also pronunced as /ðeɪər/. Is it common to hear... More on forum.wordreference.com

July 30, 2024 -

Question to the natives: is there any difference between either of the three? Also, if you do distinguish them, it would be interesting for me to know what accent you have. I've almost convinced myself that I can sometimes hear the /j/ sound in "they're" in some accents. Am I tripping?

October 3, 2023 - So it is /ðeɪɚ/. In some dialects, "there and "their" might sound the same as "they're". The /ɚ/ sound is sometimes written as /ər/ in dictionaries. But that isn't IPA. The IPA symbol /r/ represents a sound not used in English. Dictionaries make other pronunciation mistakes.
