My brother in Christ I'm not paying 1000 euros for a P53 with the botom tier FHD panel and low end Quadro. P72 for over 2000 euros? Are you actually insane?
It's sad because I'll gladly buy one, just not when there are new (!) laptops with Ryzen & RTX 30XX / 40XX for almost the same price. I've even seen T16 AMD being sold for less than 1000 euros.
Tank like build quality can't save aging components, unfortunately...

I know everyone recommends the T480 - they’ve got a solid record and great modularity, but they’re also all over 7 years old now.
Batteries are going to be worn, replacement batteries seem to already be scarce (Edit: apparently aftermarket batteries are fine and readily available), and I guess the ports and hinges won’t last long term either, so buying one today seems less of a value proposition than it was in 2018-2022.
Also, while the processor is far from totally obsolete, it’s pretty old!
Is my thinking wrong on this? Are there better alternatives?

When you search it helps if you look at the date of the posts you found :) T480 is far from being obsolete, it runs WIndows 11 and components are easily available, but it IS Gen 8 Intel CPU which is not upgradeable. So don't expect lightning fast experience. Should be enough for tasks like browsing, office work (spreadsheets/Word docs), some programming. Definitely not gaming, and not anything that requires fast CPU (ie local data processing, video processing etc). If you're looking to use Linux then T480 might be what you're looking for. If you're looking for something faster but still want to go with used ones, I'd say go with T14 series or P14 series (P series will be better equipped, like have Nvidia GPU, but a bit less mobile). Gen # will tell you the year of the model. EDIT: Keep in mind that many (most?) of them are not as easily upgradeable as T480 so make sure it has enough RAM on board (I'd say 16Gb is minimum and should be enough for a few years, unless your use case calls for more).

I recently purchased a T14 G1 Intel (Thinkstagram post coming soon). The RAM was upgraded to 40GB (8GB onboard + 32GB DIMM). I have a 1TB M2 on the way. I am happy with it so far. I snagged it for 195$ off eBay with the upgraded RAM. Its manufacture date is October 2020, so only 4.5 years old at this point. I intend on installing Debian once my new M2 arrives. I fully expect my T14 to last for years.
