I knew that this ThinkPad would be pretty powerful with great build quality and would have a respectable screen, but I was not expecting the long battery life, coming from using a HP Envy and a T440p. I also appreciate that it has the soft touch coating on the palm rest instead of the hard, scratchy plastic that the T440p has. I will likely be using this for the next 5+ years.
Another item that surprised me was the trackpoint. Honestly, it feels much better to use than my T440p does, and the fact that the trackpad is haptic makes using it good, but not as great as ThinkPads with dedicated buttons.
The only thing that bothered me at first was the trackpad. It came with the "tap to click" (something like that) setting on in Windows, and the trackpad was an absolute mess with it on; however, whenever I turned that off, the trackpad became tied with my MacBook Pro's.
Also, you hate hearing a lot of fan noise when stressing a laptop, maybe don't buy this. I don't care about fan noise at all, but it should be noted that it is loud.

Just upgraded to a ThinkPad P1 Gen 7. What a beast!

Thinkpad P1 gen 7. Impressions.

After many solid years with my beloved X1 Carbon Gen 6, I finally made the jump. And I must say, what an upgrade!
I just got my hands on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7, and here are the specs:
Intel Core Ultra 9 185H vPro (24 cores)
16” WQXGA (2560x1600), IPS, 500 nits, 165Hz
64GB RAM
2TB SSD
NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (8GB GDDR6)
This thing absolutely flies. The display is buttery smooth with the 165Hz refresh rate, and the extra screen real estate I get from 14” to 16” makes a huge difference for multitasking. The build quality feels absolutely premium and solid, just what you’d expect from the P-series.
This is my third ThinkPad in the last ~7 years or so (after the T480 and the X1 Carbon Gen 6) and I love the design, despite the haptic touchpad, that I'll get used to eventually. And I still lean towards X1 Carbon Gen 6's keyboard, mainly for to the travel distance. The P1's keyboard is still smooth and a delight to type on, and seems a tiny bit clickier.
Of course it's heavier than the X1, but that's expected. Overall, this machine is really a ThinkPad through and through.
If anyone’s curious about performance, thermals, or anything else, happy to share more once I’ve spent a bit more time with it. So far, I’m loving it.
Any other P1 Gen 7 users here? How’s your experience been?
