Dell Laptop and Thinkpad Lenovo Docking Station Compatibility
ThinkPad USB-C Dock Compatibility
Compatibility to Lenovo USB-C Dock Gen2
r/thinkpad Wiki: Lenovo ThinkPad Docking Stations Guide
I have a Lenovo USB-C dock, came with the 90 W power adapter. Normally it charges and connects through only the USB-C port.
My question is: will this dock work with other laptops which have a USB-C thunderbolt port? For example, the 2018 Dell XPS? Will the dock also charge a laptop using only the USB-C connection (provided the laptop itself supports charging over USB-C/thunderbolt)?
I used to have the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 (NOT type C) dock and it worked on any computer with a mere USB 3.0 port. Wondering if my new dock will work on other thunderbolt laptops too.
Edit: I thought it required thunderbolt because I tried it on an Asus gl552vw which has a USB-C (non thunderbolt) port and it didn't work. So I assumed it was because it required thunderbolt.
I noticed this (https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/ht503572):
Limitations
For the ThinkPad USB-C Dock (40A9), the system must have a USB-C port which fully supports the following:
Power Delivery (PD)
Display Port Alternative Mode
USB 3.0 Data Support
So I'm assuming that a laptop that has a USB-C port that supports each of the 3 preceding functions will support this dock.... Right??
I do already have a ThinkPad for work and can use the dock for that, but I wanted to know if I could use it for another laptop I might buy.
EDIT: I've learned a lot more about USB-C over the last while and can confirm that this will work on a laptop that has a USB-C port that supports DP alt mode, charging over USB, and obviously USB 3.0. I've used this dock on a Dell XPS 9370 (on the non-thunderbolt port too) and an HP Envy 13.
