Last week, I snatched up this beauty on eBay in the last 5 minutes of bidding. The description simply said, “Well-maintained Lenovo X1 laptop with EVO i7 chip.”
Since I couldn’t use my trusty ThinkPad E545 as well anymore because I now work on the go, I needed a new one.
So, I quickly researched online to find out what this “Lenovo X1” could do and figured out from the placement of the fingerprint scanner that it was from the 9th generation.
I rushed back to eBay, entered my max bid of €800 ($850) in the last seconds, and won it for €690 ($730).
Three days ago, it arrived:
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9, i7-1165G7, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, 4G/LTE, Touchscreen, presence detection sensor with infrared camera, so also a hybrid infrared/720p-HD camera and Nano SIM slot… Pretty awesome when you get more than you expected :D

Lifelong MAC person who is now a Thinkpad person after getting a 480 at work. The keyboard is what draws the words out of me. Nothing like this keyboard going back to IBM Thinkpad. The only problem is Intel’s miserable battery life, and Window’s lackadaisical approach to power management.

Nice! I have two almost identical except no SIM. One is my daily driver; the other I'm keeping as a backup. I love my X1X9, but you should be aware that this generation has a known hardware problem that can cause it to stop charging from the primary USB-C port. If this happens, you can still charge via the second port, though that will eventually fail too. If both ports fail, the system becomes unusable once the battery runs out. Lenovo are well aware of this problem, and will replace the system board if it's still under warranty. However, they refuse to publicly acknowlege the issue, and either can't or wont identify the root cause and produce a revised board, nor replace it if you're out of warranty. If this is going to be a mission-critical system for you, ensure you have good backups and/or renew/extend the warranty. I've already had my board replaced once, but the extended warranty runs out at the end of this year with no option to extend any further, which is why I picked up a second one as a backup.

X1 Carbon Gen 9 warm during sleep mode
Seems like the battery drain problem started when I replaced the 256gb ssd with a 1Tb WD SN750. I put back the original SSD and the battery drain during sleep became minimal. Question is.. how do I fix it? Is the issue hardware or software? I have no idea. Hope somebody can share their thoughts. More on reddit.com

July 28, 2023 - Initially, the i7 11th generation CPU seems very snappy. Partially, Windows 11 brings more snappiness to the overall experience. The 14″ display is not too small – but it could have been larger. I kept waiting for the 16″ ThinkPad, but it’s still months away, so perhaps my future upgrade will have a larger display.
