cannot make a "new" folder for desktop - Windows 10 Support
How to Fix “Could not find this item” Error
How to delete a folder that's "no longer located" there?
Desktop completely missing from C:\Users\<user>\ || Any suggestions?
I have an empty folder on a secondary drive in Windows 10. It's visible in the directory listing through File Explorer, Command Prompt and PowerShell. However, I cannot delete it. Here's things I've tried:
-
Deleting it simply does nothing. No error message or anything. The folder simply remains, even after rebooting.
-
Trying to move the folder gives the error "This is no longer located in D:\. Verify the item's location and try again." Trying again doesn't help, neither does rebooting, ejecting, etc.
-
I've tried copying a file into the folder, but all that does is create a new folder of the same name, which can be deleted/moved, but the original one remains.
-
Using Unlocker will successfully unlock, but still nothing can be done to the folder. After unlocking, I tried again and I got a BSOD. I haven't tried it since.
-
The folder name does not appear in the registry anywhere.
-
In File Explorer, I can open the folder, but no column headers appear, e.g., name, type, size. It just says, "This folder is empty."
How can I get rid of this thing?
Have you tried to open Excel first and then search for the file there?
Martin, no expert if forums recommends anything by AVG since it bloated up and started causing issue 10 years ago. Optimizer suites are also often harmful. All Windows 10 needs are a great install and built-in maintenance.
I would uninstall AVG in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features and see if you can See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-restore-windows-10
Right click on one of the files and choose Open With, change it to the correct app that should open that type of file.
There are always two C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (86) for compatibility issues.
Based on your response I will have further steps if necessary.
When the desktop is refreshed, any shortcut file that is not in the C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop folder will not appear. Right click on your desktop and a drop-down menu will appear. Select Refresh and any icons whose file no longer exist will not appear.
Try opening your OneDrive and delete from there. It might be hung up syncing so every time you delete it from your desktop the OneDrive Sync puts it back.
The wallpaper I set, so my own wallpaper.
Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.
Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
Click View and make sure 'Address Bar' is turned on.
Paste this into the Address Bar at the top and hit Enter.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Please provide a screenshot of that Registry Editor page.
Your Desktop directory has been moved to a different location. To find its new location:
- Create a new file on the Desktop
- Right-click the file and click Properties
- On the General tab make note of the file's path. It will include the Desktop directory's current location.
This solution might be late but you have to write: cd onedrive then cd desktop
Hopefully this helps :D
