You need to buy a few mains powered Thread devices to act as repeaters. This is a good blog that explains this: https://www.evehome.com/en-us/blog/discover-your-thread-network . I use these Onvis Matter over Thread smart plugs to extend my network: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C13ZQ5DZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Answer from JasonFir399 on reddit.com

Have a v3 Aeotech hub that has matter/thread. It sits on one side of house. In that room I have some new smartwings matter blinds. Work perfect.

On the other side of house I have some other new Smartwings blinds. But it is too far to see the Aeotech. I have lots of zigbw and Z-Wave devices in that side of the house but the matter blinds can’t seem to get a signal.

Any idea how to extend the matter network? I thought I could buy a 2nd Aeotech but that didn’t work. Is it a matter of having more matter devices or is there some sort of extender to reach the smarthings Aeotech hub? (Excuse the pun)

Thread mesh extenders? - Matter/Thread - Home Assistant Community
January 3, 2026 - With my Zigbee network, if I need to extend the mesh to reach some distant battery-powered device, I just buy one or two zigbee smart plugs to act as repeaters. What do I do in a Thread network? Smart plugs that support Matter are all (?) wifi devices. I can’t see Thread replacing Zigbee until cheap Thread mesh extenders become widely available.

Are All Thread Devices Repeaters?
Not all Thread devices are repeaters. As mentioned, in a Thread network, there are Router-eligible Devices (REEDs) and End Devices. REEDs can become Routers, which act as repeaters, relaying messages between devices and extending the network's range.  End Devices, on the other hand, do not have routing capabilities and can only send and receive messages directly to and from Routers or the Border Router. These are usually battery-powered and operate in a low-power state most of the time. Thread routers are typically AC or DC powered so they have the constant energy to transmit messages across t

What is the difference between a Thread Router and a Thread Border Router?
A Thread Router is a device (like a smart plug) that maintains a Thread network's stability and efficiency by routing traffic and adapting to changes. While a Thread Border Router connects the Thread network to external IP-based networks, facilitating communication with outside devices and providing additional features like network management and security.

What Is Thread?
Thread is a low-power, wireless IoT (Internet of Things) protocol designed to provide secure and reliable networking for smart home devices.  Developed by the Thread Group, an industry consortium including companies like Google, Apple, and the CSA, Thread offers a mesh networking solution that enables smart devices to communicate seamlessly with each other, creating a more efficient and robust smart home ecosystem.

r/tradfri on Reddit: What's the most inexpensive way to extend the reach of a Thread network
January 30, 2026 -

Hi! I'm looking into some of these Ikea Thread sensors, however I know the signal won't reach all the way around my home. What's the least expensive way to extend the signal? Unfortunately all the Ikea devices I want run batteries.

No Alexa, Homepod suggestions please.

As a crappy workaround I ordered a couple of the cheapest Kajplats bulbs, and am planning to just plug them in without turning them on :)

Edit: Can't recommend the bulbs as range extenders - from my experience they're not that great in terms of range, but suffer from an issue where the sensors decide to route themselves through it, and when it drops the connection, all those sensors drop as well. So in practice it made things worse for me :(

r/homeautomation on Reddit: Thread router / mesh extender devices
April 16, 2023 -

Hi, I’m looking to create a thread mesh throughout my home and beyond to some outbuildings where the current Wi-Fi won’t reach. What devices are there out there can can allow this thread network to exist? Looks like it’s just the Eve energy sockets at the moment and possible some Nanoleaf bulbs ( from what I understand anyway!!). Is there anything else out there that can do this job? Extra border routers won’t work as there is no Wi-Fi in many places, as mentioned above and I’m assuming that they won’t work properly if they’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

I’m in Europe by the way, so we don’t have anywhere near as many options as people in the US in general.

Thanks

Recommendations for Matter over Thread repeaters (FTDs) - Connected Things - SmartThings Community
2 days ago - It’s July 2026 in the United States. I’m looking for current recommendations for a totally reliable Matter over Thread repeater, also known as a Full Thread Device (FTD), that is also totally reliable with SmartThings. I have had Matter devices running at my place for about two years, but the higher floors are unreliable and Matter over Thread devices on the roof are completely nonresponsive.

So I have a HomePod Mini and I’m intrigued by Thread support. I’m not sure what the range indoors of the Thread connectivity is, however. If I get a few Nanoleaf bulbs, do they essentially daisy chain themselves? What is the practical distance between Thread devices to complete a stable connection?

December 29, 2025 - Rebuilding a Thread network can take up to 60 minutes, as each device needs to update its internal cache to store the new routes. Before taking any further steps, it’s best to refrain from initiating another restart, as this might interrupt the process.

r/homeassistant on Reddit: Matter over Thread
February 1, 2026 - Thread can mesh like Zigbee (see my previous comments on REEDs) but also supports multiple TBRs which can be incredibly useful when you have vast distances to cover (e.g. a detached garage and a main house) or a large number of devices (a single coordinator/tbr can only handle so many devices). ... I believe anything that runs off AC also works as a router/repeater/extender and if you like you can even make one yourself rather cheaply using a ESP32-C5/C6/H2 (https://esphome.io/components/openthread/) but that isn't necessarily the problem.
