Hey all- debating between the two. Leaning toward Tatami but is there anyone that feels strongly toward Thuma?
Also, height is important - what is the height of the Thuma bed vs the Tall Tatami vs Ensui Tatami?
Any photos you are kind to share of your Thuma or Tatami would be much appreciated!
Recently received my Tall Tatami Platform Bed and Tall Bedside Table and thought I’d share pictures, since similar posts on this site helped me decide which company to choose. Note that some pictures are mine, and others were actually provided by Tatami Room when I asked for additional images (shared with permission).
Overall I am impressed with the quality and sturdiness, so I highly recommend this frame and bedside table.
Note: I have mostly left Reddit since Apollo went down, so my responses to comments will likely be few and far between. Leaving this post up so it helps people in the future.
---------- Updates ----------------
(almost) 2 year update (Feb 2024): Still going strong, still recommend, still very happy with the purchase. My answers to all previous comments still stand.
1 year update (March 2023): Still going strong!
Update June 2022: Received the drawers! I’m overall satisfied by them, but they have some flaws, and on top of that I think two wheels got damaged in transit. See below for more details.
---------- OG Review ------------------
Overall things to note:
-
The bed frame took about 20 minutes to put together. Most of that time was reading the directions and making sure the rails and the like were facing the right way.
-
It took approximately three lifetimes to get everything out of the boxes and packaging that they came in. (This ended up being a good thing - the products themselves didn’t have so much as a scratch)
-
The bed frame can be assembled by one able-bodied person
-
I put pads on the bottom of the frame so the floor wouldn’t get scratched, so I can’t do a proper shake test. I’ve walked around on top of it, though, and it hasn’t budged.
-
Didn’t get the headboard because would cover the windows. You can see it in some company-provided pictures and a link to another Reddit review at the bottom though
-
The drawers on the bedside table open very smoothly
-
They took about two months to arrive, but I’m actually still waiting on the storage drawers that I ordered at the same time. However, I’m not remotely upset about any of this. For one, they had a banner on their site saying there would be long delays, so I knew before I even had the items in the cart. Also, when it was time for the frame and bedside table to ship, they reached out and confirmed that I wanted to go through with the order, and they told that the drawers wouldn’t be arriving until May (update: they shipped in May and arrived in early June)
-
Customer service was really responsive. I emailed them a few times, and they were happy to answer my questions. I still can’t believe they sent me additional pictures lol
-
I got the honey oak color. I was expecting it to be a bit more yellow from other Reddit pictures, but it’s definitely more brown. Still very nice. Also, there is one natural finish picture from the company below
-
My mattress is about 10 inches tall
-
Edit: It has two support legs attached to one middle support rail. See comment for more info
-
Update on the drawers: They look great. Most of the drawers are made up of the sturdy wood used in the bed frame, and the colors match exactly. In a nice touch, the top of the front of the drawer actually overlaps with the bottom of the bed frame side rail, so the drawer won’t get lost beneath the frame. However, the bottom of the drawer is particle board, and a small sliver snapped off during assembly. Also, for one of the drawers, a side piece seems to be cut unevenly, because it doesn’t lay flush with the other pieces. (You can zoom in on the “front view with drawers” image below - look at the bottom left corner of the drawer on the right.) In the end, though, l didn’t really care enough, so I didn’t reach out to Customer Service. Edit: I hear scratching against the hardwood when I open one of the drawers. Something must have happened to the wheels in transit, as the box the drawer came in was damaged where the wheels are. (See attached picture “Damaged Drawer Packaging.”) I cannot believe I didn’t realize this earlier. I took the picture because I was worried and thought I’d tested both drawers!
-
Edit: Someone in the comments below got confirmation from Tatami Room that the handles for the drawers are not in the middle (as displayed on their site) but on the top (as displayed by my pictures)
Happy to answer any other questions!

dang you are so thorough. thank you for this. I know I am not the only one who is appreciative.
This is great because it's thorough.
However: We've had same tatami bed for 16-18 months now and did love it, but about 6 months ago it started to creak and has only gotten worse since then. I noticed that some of the glued joists in the support beams (that come pre-assembled) are starting to become unglued, so I wonder if that's part of why it's gotten so creaky.
It's beautiful but I wish we'd bought a Thuma bed instead.
edit: and customer service was great when purchasing, but they have not responded to any emails about the issues at all. :(
Do I need tools to assemble the Thuma or Tatami bed?
How does the Thuma Classic Bed compare to the Comfort Pure Tatami Bed?
Can the Tatami Bed support heavy mattresses?
I’m planning on getting a new king bed for our master bedroom. I can’t decide between tatami room and thuma.
I like low profile beds, thuma essential seems good but I don’t like the pillowboards they offer.
Tatami room has few options, I’m not able to figure out which one to buy.
Any help would be appreciated
Hi everyone,
I've been looking through a lot of posts on reddit but hope to get a bit further input from everyone. I have deciding between the thuma, silk and snow, tatami room, and burrow chorus for a queen bed. My partner and I prefer a wooden bedframe with a headboard, but are also open to upholstered. The main question is the pricing, longetivity, and comfort/noise. I am based in Oregon and my budget is perferable less than 1500 (but may spend more if convinced!).
Thuma with headboard $1895 (https://www.thuma.co/products/the-bed?variant=40242991038569&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Branded_Thuma_Bamboo_Google_CVR_Brand_Products_Upgrades&utm_adgroup=Brand_Headboard&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAk9itBhASEiwA1my_60IxCB802k9VdAkE46wII1cyvCaP131XOxmxk0pxjHIsLpqwQ2JXMxoCiowQAvD_BwE)
Tatami room dark walnut or natural finish w/ headboard $839 + $335 --> $1174 (https://tatamiroom.com/cgi-local/catalog.pl?category=PLATFORM_BEDS)
Chorus bed upholstered w/ headboard (this one looks good in pictures) $1168 (https://burrow.com/bedroom/beds/chorus-bed?sku=BRBD-BF-CI3-QN-UH-TP-FRSG-WNL&headboard-3-add-on=BRBD-HB-CI3-QN-UH-SG)
Silk and snow wooden bed frame w/ headboard $1170 (https://www.silkandsnow.com/en-us/wooden-bed-frame/?size=queen&product_type=wooden_bedframe&colour=rubberwood)
Please let me know your experiences and thoughts! Appreciate it
Guys,
I am debating between platform bed from Tatami room vs Thuma bed. Would love to hear about your thoughts & Suggestions.

Not familiar with either but I am intrigued about the interlocking features without need for tools. A few Tatami Room models seem to be cheaper but the quality appears to be about the same with Thuma coming off to be like an Apple-esque type product. However, I do like there is more room underneath the Thuma.
don't fall for thuma's marketing tactics. their website screams 'chic minimalist influencer' trap used to suck in the instagram millennials who want to post trendy pictures.
not familiar with tatami but if you really want to go minimal target has very minimal and inexpensive bed frames.
I’m looking at both the Thuma and Tatami Room bed frames. For the price of a Thuma+headboard & one nightstand you can get a Tatami Room frame+headboard, two nightstands, and under bed storage.
Both appear to use the same rubber wood and joinery.
I like the look of the Thuma nightstand better so i’m considering the Tatami frame and the Thuma nightstand in natural, and hoping the wood matches.
Anyone have Tatami room experiences or had the chance to see both beds?
Who owned these beds, could you please share your experience regarding customer service problems, return policy, and warranty? I know that Thuma's warranty and trial days are more than Tatami but there is a $600 difference in what I am seeing from these two pics.
Thuma Room King bed with a headboard
$2,120.63 (Including all, also including $45 first-time bed discount)
vs
Tatami Room King bed with a headboard
$1,442.00 (Including Taxes, shipping is $72 included for IL, USA)
Which one do you recommend here? Is this your first time buying a Japanese-style bed? Is it worth spending $600 extra for a Thuma bed where I would get more days of trial time and a lifetime warranty?
PS: I already checked out ValForYou bed, but skipped it as horrible customer service and a lot of delays to ship.
Thanks
I've been on the fence between Tatami Room and Thuma for AGES and finally pulled the trigger on Tatami Room (I preferred the square legs, but may splurge and buy the Thuma pillow board–best of both worlds!).
I'm very pleased so far, but mainly wanted to share info about the wood finish since the photos on their website are low quality.
I ordered the natural finish, which does have a slight gloss. It's a bit lighter than I imagined it would be but a nice neutral tone. To my surprise, the slats and support beam came it what appears to be the honey oak color (perhaps an error on their side). Perfect for showing a side by side for anyone who might be curious!
I’m considering a Tatami Bed frame and Thuma bed frame. I noticed the Tatami beds range from 1100lbs to 1600lbs for weight limits while the Thuma is 1500lbs+. The Tatami appear to be build with better wood materials, more and thicker slats, and more center legs. I find it hard to believe Thuma’s weight limit could be higher for Tatami’s similar bed frames. Is Thuma accurate or is there some marketing spin?
I ordered the Tall Platform Bed in Natural after seeing so many glowing reviews of Tatami Room. When it arrived, the center support and slats were the wrong color. I contacted them and learned this was intentional. They’ve quietly switched to using a honey-toned wood for these “unseen” parts, regardless of the color you order. Except the slats are visible, even with a mattress.
When I asked if they could replace the parts, they immediately told me to pack it all up and return it for a refund. No apology, no solution. Just indifference. I guess fuck me for wanting my bed to be the same color.
I swear they are doing this on purpose. The return process is tedious and the current wait time is 14 weeks. Most people won’t bother.
On top of that, the quality is underwhelming. The finish is uneven, the wood feels plasticky, and one of the corners doesn’t fit right.
I’m too exhausted to deal with repacking this bed after waiting so long, but I want to warn others. This company is deceptive, dismissive, and I regret giving them a chance instead of just getting a Thuma.
I’m deciding between the Thuma and TatamiRoom bed frames. After shipping to Canada the price point is similar, so it comes down to aesthetics and build quality.
Initially i was leaning towards the Thuma in Walnut, which is the colour I prefer but after seeing customer pics being on the warmer side with the orange hue I got turned off by it. So if I go with Thuma it’ll be the natural colour.
How is the Natural colour? Does it yellow over time? Is the hue on the yellow side to begin with or it’s really a natural wood colour? I just don’t want that yellowish hue that I remember from old school furniture….
On the build quality side of things, is one better than the other? I believe they are both Ruberwood?
I'm trying to decide between Tatami Room and Thuma, and wanted to know your experiences with both/either. I'm leaning more towards the Tatami Room, but their website makes me a little hesitant, haha. And if you bought a Tatami Room frame, did you buy their mats as well? The mat + shipping for it would end up costing me $500+, so I want to know that it's worth that price.
I’ve seen most posts here about the Tall version of the Tatami Rooms platform bed
Has anyone gotten the regular version? Curious to know the differences. Can’t visualize if 9 inches height is too low and I should get the tall 15 inch version instead
TLDR: I can't choose between three different (and very popular) bed frames. Help :(
ETA: Search details
Yet another post about these three bed frame brands, sincere apologies in advance if this breaks any rules (please let me know!). I feel like I've read so many posts on r/furniture r/Mattress r/Thuma and various blog reviews from Google searches (it's been my 2-3am hyper-fixation), but am still failing to lean strongly towards major pros or strongly away from major cons - so I hope your wisdom can help yet another person with new insights or comments and to decide between the three. I've noted some key pros/cons that most everyone has noted in the web-verse, and are making it difficult for me to choose.
Some universal considerations and preferences:
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Budget: less than $1,500
Size: Queen
Style: solid wood, no headboard, platform, easy assembly (by myself), minimal
Searches so far: many posts on r/furniture r/Mattress r/Thuma and various blog reviews from Google searches (it's been my 2-3am hyper-fixation)
Storefront: Online works
-
Thuma: $1,095 (Classic Bed, Queen)
-
Pros:
-
Solid, and I mean SOLID, construction based on all/most reviews read - hardly any creaks or major problems noted
-
Easier assembly and disassembly (by myself)
-
Lifetime warranty (one of those I-didn't-even-know-I-needed-this options)
-
-
Cons:
-
Price, literally it. And it's honestly still less than my main budget. But I still can't pull the trigger with the two other options being strong and less pricier contenders.
-
-
-
Tatami Room: $839-849 (Tatami Platform either regular or Tall, Queen)
-
Pros:
-
Price (difference being roughly 100 banana bunches from the Thuma)
-
A solid, less pricey, and noted alternative to the Thuma, with just as or similar positive reviews on quality (though perhaps less in quantity)
-
Easier assembly and disassembly (by myself)
-
Two height options
-
-
Cons:
-
Much longer lead time (not a major deal-breaker, but my mattress will be coming in before the frame, and I'd prefer to lessen the time on the floor)
-
One-year warranty
-
-
-
KD Frames: $214 (Fold, Queen, SALE), $239 (Ekko, Queen, SALE), $279 (Nomad, Queen, SALE)
-
Pros:
-
PRICE DIFFERENCE - Could possibly get another piece of furniture or a several boxes of bananas; and a sale!
-
Easier (than most others) assembly and disassembly
-
For the price point, folks have noted quality, solid construction
-
Five-year warranty (a pro against the Tatami Room)
-
-
Cons:
-
Unfinished - while many would see this as an opportunity, this would likely be a lost project for me
-
Assembly and disassembly is not as easy as the two costlier choices
-
May occasionally or rarely creak, requiring semiannual or annual bolt re-tightening (not a major deal-breaker but I'm also not... good... with memory.......)
-
Not as easy assembly as the other two (again, not major, but I am also lazy)
-
-
Is there anything that I'm not considering? Any other perspectives you lovely folks can provide? Is there a mystery 4th contender that I shouldn't (but should) sleep on? Thanks so much in advance!
I love my thuma. It was honestly worth the price in my opinion. It's solid as hell, no creaks, super easy to put together. I recently moved and it was the easiest bed to move with
I love my tatami bed from tatami room. sturdy af. If you can endure the long lead time then go for it.
