I bought the THX Summer 6A in February of this year. Im also in the Midwest and sleep pretty hot. I loved it in winter, I did layer a cotton waffle blanket (along with a top sheet) and it was totally perfect, super cozy and I never woke up hot. Now that we’re in summer, I’ve been sleeping with just the top sheet, and the silk comforter on the lower half of my body, and it’s been pretty great. I keep my ac at 60 degrees, so it’s pretty cold. I heard the THX was thinner than the Mommesilk, so went with that. I like how soft it is but still has some weight to it. I do wish it was more fluffy, like a down duvet, but I don’t think you can get that effect with silk, Answer from Kylie5678 on reddit.com

r/Bedding on Reddit: Silk insert recommendations
November 9, 2022 -

I've done some research on silk inserts, which I didn't even know were a thing until I learned about it on this subreddit (Thanks!!), and wanted to see if there were recommendations on which one to buy. The options available are pretty overwhelming, so I was hoping to narrow it down to a few based on other hot sleepers' experience. Don't have a max budget in mind but willing to shell out a little extra if it means a better night of sleep!

Sure! What temp do you keep your room at generally? Does your room temps fluctuate with the seasons (open windows, no a/c or heater for certain days when the temps outside are beautiful, etc)? What is the size of your duvet (dimensions)? Is there any specific material you want the silk insert's outershell to be---cotton, silk or bamboo? Silk-on-silk is only preferable if you have really bad allergies, imo, so the extra expense should only be undertaken by the extremely wealthy (that has money like that to burn) or those that suffer bad allergies and need it to have a decent night's sleep. Silk is amazing for hot sleepers and is pretty much the only material that keeps you cool first before insulating you second. Other materials like wool or down are great insulators (if you have cold room temps or are a cold sleeper) but you definitely should stay away from them with a ten-foot-pole if you are a hot sleeper. Most claim that down or wool 'regulates' your temps, but, imo, that's only because they keep their rooms at icebox temps and/or aren't hot sleepers. I've yet to sleep under a down or wool comforter/insert in 76F room temps and not start sweating buckets (both of them were 'summer' weight ones, fyi). With a silk insert, 76F keeps you mostly cool with a bit of an uncomfortable feeling of warmness starting up, sort of like a warning that any higher than 76F and you'll start to sweat; no other insert materials can get up to that temp without you starting to sweat in bed. I've come to find that silk inserts are amazing for saving money in the summer since usually I had to crank up the AC in summer to 70F to not wake up sweating with my old bedding setup; now I can have it at 74-76F and not wake up sweating (while saving money, yay!). Let me know and I'll help guide you on what you should get :)

Thxsilk is where I bought mine from. Actually I've bought 4 from there. The ones with the cotton cover since they were all under $200 each.

Hi! My husband sleeps extremely hot all year round even though we’re in the Midwest. We’re looking to upgrade our bedding to help him with a quality linen duvet cover and silk comforter insert. The insert will be a summer weight and then I plan to just get a smaller quilt for myself to keep warmer.

We’ve narrowed it down to these two lightweight/summer silk inserts. Does anyone have experience with either, good or bad? Which would you pick?

Hey all,

I have a queen-size DLX premier hybrid (14" tall, which will be 14" off the ground) on order, and I'm taking the opportunity to upgrade my bedding as well.

I'm a hot sleeper, and my bedroom will swing from the low 60s for a couple of months a year up to the mid-70s for longer periods. I currently have an old down comforter that I kick off in the summer, and I'm looking to upsize to a king THXsilk 6a comforter (102x90) in the spring/fall fill.

I'm a little unsure of how I'll like the extra weight of the silk comforter, so I'd like to pair it with a lightweight breathable cover in the $120 price range. I'm having a bit of trouble finding one that's properly undersized so that it doesn't slide around, so I'm looking for suggestions! A solid color is fine with me, but likely not white.

r/Bedding on Reddit: Suggestions for a silk filled duvet
August 16, 2023 -

Hi there, after seeing a few threads from u/SorcererLeotard I am interested in a silk filled duvet. I'm in the process of upgrading most of my bedding, so this seems like the most worthwhile upgrade. So here I am, seeking the wisdom from the Sorcerer of the threads.

I tend to sleep pretty hot as I don't have AC, but in general I like to be warm (o the irony) although I do sweat quite a bit. I'm looking into a Summer duvet for coolness or an all-season for balance, although I do really like the weight of my current duvet (7 lbs).

Any brand recommendations or things to look into? Budget is pretty flexible, so I'm looking into high-end and mid-high. Some that have caught my eye (from other threads) are:

  • Elle Silk

  • Lily Silk

  • ThxSilk

  • Ocochi (although I'm not sure about the bamboo lyocell)

I will probs pair it with a percale Sferra duvet cover, but I haven't looked much into this yet.

Thanks!

Most silk insert brands will be pretty similar on how they help keep you mostly cool during the night (like Elle Silk, Mommesilk, LilySilk, THXSilk, Daniadown, Ocochi, etc) but only have some variations in the outershell or how much silk fill is in it. Personally, if you're getting a summer weight the grade of the silk doesn't really matter much since ALL summer weight silk inserts will be boxstitched together, thus negating a lot of the reasons for having long-strand silk floss in the first place, so keep that in mind when you shop. I know that THXSilk has less silk fill in their silk inserts compared to most brands, so if you sleep much hotter than most or your room temps are particularly high then it definitely helps to keep track of how much silk fill is in each brand's summer weight versions and go from there. Depending on how much silk fill you want (less for more cooling properties, more for more heat retention) or what type of outershell material you want they'll all pretty much be similar enough to where it won't matter much in the long-run, imo. THXSilk I think has the nicest outershells that are cotton (6A and 7A versions respectively), though I want to be clear: all of the brands I listed will be pretty great quality overall and you'll be nitpicking most brands against one another. I love my all-season silk insert because it's pretty heavy and it was cheap as hell for what it does (which is keep me mostly cool at night in temps of up to 74F), but if you don't have AC and you live in a hotter part of the world I would definitely just go with a summer weight silk insert that has a lower thread count for its outershell and less silk fill to ensure you get the best breathability. Personally, I wish most silk insert brands used linen outershells but they're too expensive for most and I suppose most wouldn't like the rougher texture if they're not using it inside of a duvet cover, so... sigh we'll likely never have one unless it's a handmade one from Etsy :( If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

r/Bedding on Reddit: Silk duvet - which weight for hot sleeper?
January 21, 2024 -

After buying and returning 3 different down and down/feather duvets that were way too warm, I’ve decided to try a silk insert.

I live in a cold climate but I’m a hot sleeper. I currently sleep with 2 quilts - one is heavy cotton and then a velvet one on top, this is usually warm enough for me, but occasionally I do use an extra blanket in winter.

I’m debating between Mommesilk’s summer weight silk ($189), or they have a 2 in 1 option that includes a summer insert and an all season insert that can both be used separately or be snapped together in winter, for $269. Or, I was considering THXSilk 7A summer weight for $279.

Does anyone know if there’s a big difference in warmth between the summer/other weights? How do these brands compare in terms of quality?

Thank you!

I’ve never heard of this brand but I looked it up and now I want one (of the mommesilk)!!!

For a silk insert I would highly recommend the 2-in-1 since it has the best customization options you can get, imo. It's really lovely in that you can use 3 options that will perfectly work for most situations/seasons: 1) the lowest weight (summer) insert that you can use by itself for summer/warmer room temps; 2) the middle weight (in-between summer and all-season weight) one for spring/fall or if you sleep colder than most or have chillier room temps; or, 3) both of them paired together for really cold temps during winter or ice-box room temps. Honestly, it's a great option for those that are unsure about what they need as well as people that have colder winter temps since both of them paired together will definitely keep you warm (though too warm for those that live in warmer climates, I'll admit). Overall, though, both Mommesilk and THXSilk are good brands and I will say that the THXSilk 7A inserts tend to run quite hot for many hot sleepers so I thought it might be wise to point that out----you'd probably do better with THXSilk's 5A or 6A silk insert since they'll sleep cooler all-around vs the 7A (the double-cocoon mulberry silk will have much more insulating properties than their 5A and 6A counterparts, certainly). As another user pointed out, most silk inserts will work really well overall and generally the lower the silk grade the more cold pockets will eventually accumulate for the silk insert which will either be a boon or an eyesore depending on how you sleep (if you sleep really hot then a lower grade silk or Tussah silk will fit you much better because of this feature). If, however, you want as much insulation as you can with a silk insert then a higher grade of silk will be right down your alley :) The biggest differences between Mommesilk and THXSilk is usually the silk grade and the outershell fabric. THXSilk has far more options (they have the lowliest silk grades and the highest silk grades and different fabric outershells for each) whereas Mommesilk is (I believe) 6A on all of their products (though I could be wrong about this) and the same fabric outerhsell for all their inserts. Personally I don't care much for fabric outershells being high-quality or not since it's kind of moot in the end if you're sticking it inside of a duvet cover, so long as it's cotton that's fairly breathable and doesn't make much noise it's usually A-OK by me, in the end; though, I understand how many would want a really silky-smooth outershell since it's very pretty and lends a higher-quality feeling to it, even if I feel it's kind of unneeded in the end. THXSilk has the lowest silk fill between it and Mommesilk so they will be the more breathable option between the two if you are going by that metric, but with the 2-in-1 their summer weight is pretty breathable by itself and the customization angle kind of is more of a winning combo (at least to me when compared against THXSilk if you're unsure what will work best for you). Whichever brand you go with in the end, though, both will be pretty nice quality overall for a silk insert and likely won't disappoint you when compared to a feather/down insert since they are a game-changer for most hot sleepers, in comparison, imo ;) Hope this helps and if you have any more questions feel free to ask! :)
