Managing Fatigue and Eye Symptoms with Hashimoto's – Any Tips?
Feeling fatigued is just your new normal I’m afraid. At least I haven’t found a solution for it yet in the 5 years since I was diagnosed. It’s not as bad with medication as it was before, but it still persists. As for the eyes, you need to see a Ophthalmologist and have them check for Thyroid Eye Disease. The first symptoms are usually the feeling of eye dryness, irritation or foreign body sensation. This is often accompanied by excessive tear production, eye pressure, pain, itchiness, and often blepharitis from frequent eye rubbing. Later, as it progresses, you may start noticing your vision getting a bit blurry or noticing that it’s hard to focus when reading small text. You’ll also start to notice worsening light sensitivity In this stage, the problem isn’t really due to vision loss, but rather a decline in visual acuity related to the worsening of Proptosis which pushed your eyes out of alignment causing double vision. The proptosis is the real cause of all of the symptoms. In the initial stages, there’s no permanent damage to your optic nerve, but left unchecked the disease will continue to progress. As the eyes are pushed farther forward, due to continued swelling of the tissues around them, eventually the optic nerve will start to stretch. This will cause thinning of the nerve and that damage is irreversible. Untreated, it can eventually lead to blindness. It’s important to rule out T.E.D. anytime you are having eye symptoms if you have any autoimmune thyroid disease. It used to be that the only treatments available were steroid eye drops and orbital decompression surgeries. Neither were permanent solutions and usually patients would need to repeat orbital decompression surgery if the steroid drops were unable to stop progression. There are some new treatments available though that are very effective at halting the disease as well as reversal of most or all of the Proptosis. Don’t just assume it’s dry eyes. More on reddit.com

Yes. I always tell ny husband, "my eyes feel heavy. My levels are off." My dermatologist told me I have ocular rosecea as well as the skin on my face. I just assume they both flare at the same time since they are both autoimmune. More on reddit.com

In some patients, eye protrusion makes it difficult for the lids to close properly and the cornea becomes exposed and vulnerable. When the optic nerve is compromised, progressive and irreversible vision loss occurs. Rarely, orbital swelling may precipitate glaucoma that also affects the optic nerve. ... If your doctor suspects you have an overactive thyroid gland, your thyroid function must first be evaluated and treated appropriately by an internist trained in doing so.
