Increasing levothyroxine doses early in pregnancy is associated with a lower risk for pregnancy loss in hypothyroid women
October 9, 2016 - THE FULL ARTICLE TITLE: Maraka S et Effects of increasing levothyroxine on pregnancy outcomes in women with uncontrolled hypothyroidism. Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). August 3, 2016 [Epub ahead of print]. SUMMARY OF THE STUDY In this study, 96 hypothyroid women who were treated in Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota from 2011 to 2013 were included. They were between 18 to 45 years old and all were treated with Levothyroxine before becoming pregnant and all had a blood test for TSH in first trimester of pregnancy with level of more than 2.5 mIU/L (the goal level of TSH in first trimester of pregnancy is less than 2.5).

Levothyroxine in Pregnancy - 70 Years of Levothyroxine - NCBI Bookshelf
March 12, 2021 - Thyroid hormone homeostasis changes markedly during pregnancy, and first trimester-specific reference ranges for thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH) are needed to diagnose hypothyroidism. Treatment consists in levothyroxine (LT4) in this setting (triiodothyronine or desiccated thyroid ...

In healthy women, serum concentrations of total T3 and T4 increase during the first trimester and reach a plateau either late in the second trimester or early in the third trimester (Guillaume, Schussler, & Goldman, 1985; Weeke et al., 1982). The temporary chorionic gonadotropin-induced increase ...

November 8, 2022 - In 2011, ATA accepted thyroid-stimulating hormone of 2.5 mIU/L as the upper limit of the normal level in the first trimester [4], while similar patterns were observed in the association of L-T4 treatment during pregnancy and offspring birth and neurodevelopmental outcomes before and after this change in clinical practice.

Levothyroxine Use During Pregnancy | Drugs.com
Hypothyroidism during pregnancy is associated with a higher rate of complications, including spontaneous abortion, pre-eclampsia, stillbirth and premature delivery. Maternal hypothyroidism may have an adverse effect on fetal neurocognitive development. Pregnant women taking this drug should have their TSH measured during each trimester and dose adjusted as appropriate.

Thyroid autoimmunity is common and may contribute to miscarriages and hypothyroidism. The fetus is totally dependent on maternal thyroxine supply during the first trimester of gestation and up to mildgestation for normal neurologic development and nervous system maturation.
