Okay some of you aren't understanding what I'm saying. This is being saved and extracted to my computer's drive BEFORE I copy it to my switch's SD card. I went on Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to find an older version of Tinfoil and the files extract no problem. https://web.archive.org/web/20240922010320/https://tinfoil.io/Download I did try to install this one but it sadly didn't work either. I am on 18.1.0 with Atmosphere 1.9.1 on emummc so maybe it's not compatible with the Atmosphere version? I ended up using the applet version and while it does work and I'll deal with it for now, I would much prefer having Tinfoil on the Switch's home menu. I legitimately think Tinfoil is just distributing corrupted files. I also tried to download it on my phone and Steam Deck and they both give errors as well. Here's another person that had the same problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/SwitchPirates/comments/1ky4bda/fresh_install_of_tinfoil_corrupted/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button It may be hard to see but it's the same files that have the issue. r/SwitchPirates on Reddit: Tinfoil NRO won't extract. Can I use NSP instead?
June 27, 2025 -

I tried multiple times last night to download and extract Tinfoil but the NRO is the only thing that won't extract properly. I've installed sigpatches, tried different versions, and looking around forums for help to no avail. I've seen people say to use DBI, but I heard the dev was adding malicious code into newer versions so I'm a bit worried to use that, plus I can't read Russian. Is it an issue with tinfoil itself, or could my PC possibly be blocking the file? Any help would be appreciated.

New to switch modding. When downloading the tinfoil self installer NRO from tinfoil.io, I keep having a couple of files be corrupted and fail extraction. This happens on multiple devices/OS and repairing with WinRAR didn't work either. The .NRO file does extract; is this all I need, or do I need everything from the zip? Is there perhaps a mirror or alternative source for the self installer that isn't corrupt?

I'm trying to install Tinfoil to my switch but the zipped file has two files that refused to extract.

I've tried 7-zip and WinRAR as well and while they do technically extract, it still gives an error that the files are corrupted. I tried installing on my switch anyway using the non applet version of the launcher but it crashes when it installs and causes a blank application with an endless loading circle in the middle and you can't open it.

hey bud, its frustrating when things are kind of everywhere rather than centralized with cleaerer instructions (unless I'm missing something). I literally just installed tinfoil last night and I'm up and running without issues. I reformatted my sd card because my old install was outdated and rather than trial and error setting up atmosphere, tinfoil, retroarch etc, i did it fresh. So to get TinFoil as of today Jan 12, 2022 For the actual file, I went to the tinfoil website - https://tinfoil.io/ . You decide if you want to open this link, but you can also just google tinfoil. download the self installer, current version is Tinfoil 13.0 NRO. There are 4 options, I chose this. I then used this Youtube guide ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy9x1g5iDgk - or search - How To Install Tinfoil And Get New Game Section on Switch! ("Working 2022") ). Start at the 1:47 mark if you already have atmosphere, as this is where the Tinfoil guide starts. You can stop at 4:20 at they proceed with sigpatch, tegra instructions (assuming you have these already). Assumingyou know how to inject a payload already, continue from 7:53. It is the bootup menue and opening Tinfoil from your switch. So these instructions again are assuming you're good to go with everything else except Tinfoil, if not, just follow the entire video. (i'm not sure if I could post links, hopefully this doesn't get deleted)

Tinfoil has its own website on which you can download the files and then, using an homebrew app named Goldleaf, you can install it

June 28, 2025 -

Hi all, im trying to set up tinfoil for my switch but it seems that the tinfoil self install zip has a broken nro file that is preventing me from extracting it.

I currently am unaware what system version i am on as it does not tell me in the system settings - i most probably have updated in the last month. (i just have a little text saying System update is ready.)

Wanted to see if anyone else is having similar issues, or has a different method of getting the needed files to download tinfoil. Thanks :)

April 25, 2026 - I updated Atmosphere and Hekate to the newest versions and tinfoil has stopped working for me all together. I tried to redownload it, but when I attempt to extract it, it says that the files are corrupt. It's done this for all of the install options. I've seen that its not just me but I have only found one other person talk about it on reddit.

Since a lot of people seems to have trouble making tinfoil work on the latest Firmware, here's how I made it work :

  1. Install as normal ( I use the self installer NRO)

  2. delete the db file (/switch/tinfoil/db/titles.us.en.json)

  3. Launch it in Airplane mode

  4. Delete Every shop in it ( The Shared saves files one too )

  5. restart it , Add your own shop if needed

  6. close it , remove airplane mode

  7. Enjoy

r/SwitchPirates on Reddit: Simple Fix to Tinfoil Installation Errors (for users who followed guides at https://nh-server.github.io or https://switch.homebrew.guide)
August 3, 2022 -

Preamble

If you've searched around this subreddit even a bit, you may be aware that the aforementioned guides are NOT suggested by this community. In fact, having the negligence to admit having a struggle with something when you haven't used the suggested guide is a good way to get downvoted. Are they wrong for being unforgiving to users who fail to follow their wiki and FAQ's? Not particularly. But, maybe you're like me and scared/stressed by the idea of restarting everything from scratch (my "RCM jig" barely works and I'm terrified at such an idea because I'm worried I'll lose my AutoRCM). Regardless of your reasoning, you and many other people (as my research from my own endeavours to solve this problem has made abundantly clear) just don't want to start over; fortunately, I can tell you a simple method that won't require you to.

Set-Up Check

Naturally, we first need to ensure that you are doing everything else correctly: this "solution" won't fix your problem if your problem isn't what this guide is meant to solve. There are 3 main parts here that should be checked:

  1. Are Atmosphere and Hekate up to date? You can see Atmosphere's version in your Nintendo Switch's System Settings; Hekate's version is displayed at the upper-left corner of the Nintendo Switch's screen after injecting its payload: if either of them are outdated, you should return to your original guide's page on updating CFW to fix that.

  2. Are your "sigpatches" properly applied? Atmosphere is built with a precautionary measure that blocks unnatural titles from being installed to protect uninformed users from making unsafe mistakes or something. But, because that's precisely what we -- as informed users -- want to do, we'll need these "sigpatches" to circumvent this. You most likely will find links to these files in one of this subreddit's sticked threads.

  3. Is Tinfoil properly set up to install? From Tinfoil's site, you should have grabbed the "Self-Installer" build -- not the "Applet Mode" or "NSP" equivalents; the folder said download should contain is one named "tinfoil" containing "tinfoil.nro" among other things and you'll want to put it directly in the "switch" folder on your Switch's SD Card.

The "Solution"

Assuming you've properly adhered to all provided instructions, you probably don't understand why Tinfoil just won't install -- your set-up is ALMOST just like that of a user who followed this community's suggested guide. The key difference between that guide and the guide you used is your payload: your guide injects Hekate to boot Atmosphere while that guide injects fusee to boot it. Why this matters is because, from what I've heard, Hekate does not properly apply sigpatches. So, you'll need to boot "fusee" to load Atmosphere instead. Fortunately, Hekate allows you to easily boot other payloads from itself. To do this, download the latest release of fusee.bin (which releases alongside updates to Atmosphere and, thus, is found on Atmosphere's Github page's releases) and put it directly in /bootloader/payloads; inject your Hekate payload as usual but instead tap the large "Payloads" button (the second large option from the right side of Hekate's top menu) and select "fusee.bin." Now, attempt to install Tinfoil once more (if there is a failed installation attempt leftover from previous efforts, be sure to delete it through the options menu on the home menu accessible through the (+) button). If it worked, celebrate! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things to Remember

Every time you want to play around with unnatural titles, you'll need to inject that "fusee.bin" again: failure to do so, even after prior successful installation, will lead to the Switch saying that your unnaturally installed titles are "corrupted" and it will refuse to run them. But, don't worry, all you have to do to fix this is inject that payload again and then allow it to go through its process of checking for corruptions -- as long as you booted Atmosphere with that payload, it'll find none and remove the error peacefully.

Well intended, but a few misleading statements. Atmosphere doesn't block anything. It requires the additional sigpathes to allow things to load / not ask questions. Fusee, auto applies any patches present, and loads an emunand if present, and the sysnand otherwise. A proper hekate_ipl.ini found in SD:\bootloader\hekate_ipl.ini configured correctly can also load patches. The main difference is fusee is 'whatever I have' in terms of patches. Load emunand if present. Sysnand if not. Hekate, using it's hekate_ipl.ini is linear. Can only load what you tell it to for example. Sysnand, or emunand. Patches, or not. You are correct that the nh guide doesn't offer a set up that configures this correctly with hekate. You are correct that booting with fusee will load all patches. You could also configure hekate_ipl.ini to use fusee if you like, having it as a launch option. Such as adding [Fusee boot] payload=/bootloader/payloads/fusee.bin {} To your hekate_ipl.ini Otherwise, you can configure it to load sigpatches to specific options such as [Atmosphere FSS0 EmuMMC] fss0=atmosphere/package3 kip1patch=nosigchk kip1=atmosphere/kips/* emummcforce=1 {} Not every detail under the sun, but hope it helps clear a few things up. :)

I spent 2-3 hours stubbornly trying to solve this problem ... Within my hopeless wandering, I found this thread which described an idea I hadn't yet tried and it was the one that worked. It eventually prompted me to try and learn more about its causes, which lead me to this post about someone wondering similar things and a very enlightening reply on it . In hopes of saving other stubborn/scared/lost users, I tried to thoroughly explain the information I learned while "covering all bases." I hope I don't get murdered here for trying to help those users, even though they don't use the recommended guide: some people are just gonna be stubborn or scared, so we might as well try to make things easier for them. I would have loved to flair this post as a "Guide" but that flair option didn't seem available to me: I thought maybe it'd be better to just leave no flair, but I think the submission page had a line requesting that users flair their posts, so I felt I probably should ... even if said flair doesn't feel as accurate as it should be.

[NEW POST] (solution at the end)

Hello everyone,

I am new to modding the switch. I already installed a custom firmware on my 3DS and eveything worked fine. Now with the switch it is a little more complicated but I followed the stickied guide very closely. I have an OG unpatched switch from before 2018 - I checked.

I get the CFW to run but everytime I'm trying to install tinfoil I'll get an error saying I need to go back to the home menu and update the software.

I did the following steps two times now but I still get the error:

  • formatted SD-Card to exFat on PC (now tried FAT32 - still error)

  • extracted hekate.zip, atmosphere.zip and fusee.zip (sig-patch) into SD-root

  • place fusee.bin (from atmosphere-download) into /bootloader/payloads/

  • create hekate_ipl.ini in /bootloader/

  • create exosphere.ini into SD-root

  • create default.txt in /atmosphere/hosts/

  • inject hakate payload

  • create partition based emuNAND -> 29 full -> start

  • create emuMMC -> sd partition part 1

  • power switch off and copy old stock switch files (gallery etc.) from PC into SD-root

  • insert SD into switch

  • inject hekate payload and boot into atmosphere

Everything until here works fine.

__________

Now the part where it crashes:

  • extract tinfoil self installer into SD-root

  • open gallery on switch

  • click on tinfoil -> Error (2155-8007)

I don't get what I am doing wrong.
