So I know this is a TJMaxx subreddit but I’m unable to find one for Canadian Winners, Homesence, Marshalls.
I’m an employee at Winners in British Columbia Canada and I wanted to ask if anyone employed by TJX has an opinion on the time frames made by the company. I assume if you work for them you know that times frames can be as little as 4 minutes. Maybe it’s different for TjMaxx employees but I have never met anyone able to do a tote bin in 4 minutes (a ‘tote bin’ is a large black plastic box which they fill full of things like belts, hats, socks, books, sunglasses, kids toys, etc) sometimes if it’s books or kids toys that I don’t have to take out of the plastic packaging and put security sensors on them it only takes a minute or two. But if its other things like belts, sunglasses, hats socks, etc that is shrink wrapped so I have to take it out of the plastic, sensor it for security purposes and put it away. There’s usually about 10-15 belts,10-15 hats, and roughly 10 sets of packaged socks. I’m expected to finish this in 4 minutes on top of “tidying the area around me” obviously this is my job so I don’t have a problem doing those things. I do however, have a hard time meeting the timing expectations and so do my coworkers. None of my managers have done this particular task as they all started out with the company as assistant managers and that’s not part of their job description. It’s not like I’m taking an hour to do this task but I feel like 12 minutes to do a stack (they’re stacked in 3’s) of large tote bins, clean the sales floor around me and properly dispose of my garbage and recycling in the back of warehouse as well as going to the front for price checks is a little ridiculous to say the least. Once my store manager told us “if you’re not sweating you’re not working, you need to work as hard as I do” meanwhile we’re making next to minimum wage and half of the people who work there are still in highschool. I’ve communicated with multiple of my managers about my concerns how not everyone has the same abilities and I don’t think it’s fair to put everyone in a cookie cutter position. It makes us feel very unappreciated and unmotivated due to constant criticism.
Are these expectations also in the US? I’ve been at few locations in my province so I know it’s not isolated to the store itself. I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts and opinions whether you’re an employee or not and wherever you are in the world!
