My PS4 controller is drifting but what would be better to replace it with TMR or Hall Effect
Edit: I did try to calibrate them

If you are talking about the present, the potential for TMR is higher than Hall Effects. However, at the moment, TMR is benefiting only a year of research/implementation (for controllers--it's been used in other industries for decades) while Hall Effects has had a few years (while Potentiometers have decades). This is like asking if you prefer a 6th-level Fighter vs. a 1st-level Wizard. Also in practice, it's not reliable to generalize. Different companies manufacture different models of both Hall Effect sensors and TMR. Each model will perform differently compared to other models. Not all Hall Effect modules are identical, just as not all TMR modules are identical. This is like asking if SSDs are better than HDDs and then you go out and buy a DRAM-less SSD that doesn't use SLC/MLC/TLC as a buffer, and are surprised that it gives out in a year or so.

What is the difference between Hall effect and TMR joysticks?
While both make use of magnets, Hall Effect sensors send signals based on the voltage difference when a magnetic field is applied across a semiconductor material. TMR joysticks, on the other hand, work on the phenomenon of tunneling magneto-resistance effect, where the electrical resistance changes when a magnetic field is applied.

What is the difference between Alps and TMR?
ALPS makes potentiometer thumbsticks which is an older standard for controllers. TMR is a different type of magnetic sensing technology that works similar to Hall Effect but is even more accurate and power efficient.

Game One - The Battle of Sensors: Hall Effect vs TMR For Your Controller - Blog
October 24, 2025 - TMR sensors use a quantum trick called tunneling, where electrons pass through a super thin layer between two magnets. The sensor’s resistance changes depending on how the magnets line up. When a joystick’s magnet moves, it changes the magnet’s alignment, which changes the resistance. The sensor turns this change into a signal, so the controller knows exactly where or how the joystick is moving. ... Durability - Like Hall effect sensors, TMR sensors don’t rely on physical contact, so there’s no friction or wear and tear.

September 25, 2025 - Compared with TMR, it consumes more power under the same conditions. ... Weak signals require amplification and are susceptible to noise interference. ... Not suitable for matrix scanning methods with row-by-row or column-by-column power supply of sensors sequentially. ... cost-effectiveness, a mature supply chain, and proven reliability, Hall Effect should be a better option.

What are TMR sticks, and are they better than Hall-Effect? | Windows Central
October 27, 2025 - The latest buzzword is TMR, short for Tunneling Magnetoresistance. It might sound like something salvaged from the Roswell crash, but it’s actually a new magnetic sensing technology used in controller sticks, and many brands are starting to use it. You’ve probably only just gotten familiar with Hall Effect joysticks and their promise of ending stick drift, now along comes TMR, touted as the next step forward in precision.
